On Monday Roger Goodell conditionally reinstated Michael Vick. So far we’ve heard from teams that won’t sign Michael Vick, but no teams have outwardly expressed an interest in signing him. Bad publicity and all, Michael Vick will get a shot somewhere. He has too much talent for a team not to weigh his pros over his cons.
Throughout this process we’ve heard from Roger Goodell, but have been mostly in the dark from Michael Vick’s side. Which probably was a smart move for Michael Vick. On Tuesday, Vick’s agent Joel Segal joined The Frank and Buck Show on WFNZ which is hosted by former NFL players Frank Garcia and Brentson Buckner. Buckner was part of the Segal stable as a player and that’s how he was able to set up this interview. Segal has mastered the art of the cliche, but gives a few nuggets in the interview.
How’s Michael Vick doing since he’s been released from his obligation to the US Government:
“The reaction yesterday when the commissioner called was just excitement. He’s really happy to be back, excited to play football. You know he’s got a lot to prove and he’s ready to do it.”
As an agent, you never expect a situation like this to take place, is this something you prepare for or something you address?
“I think I addressed it because you couldn’t prepare for this because you’ve never been through it before. You understand that you can learn quickly, become resilient, and protect your players in way you didn’t realize you’d have to.”
Is it more beneficial for Michael Vick to get this deal done behind closed doors and not let it play out in the media:
“There’s no doubt my style has been to do it low key. Try to be respectful of the process. Let everything happen slowly and procedurally. There’s no way there’s going to be daily updates. We’re going to take this one day at at time.”
Is the UFL a viable option?
“I’ve never commented on the UFL. I have no comment yet. We’re just taking it one day at a time.”
Was the conditional reinstatement something you guys thought might happen:
“When Mike and I talked very regularly every day, we never predicted anything. We just said let’s get the decision and whatever it is we’re going to go with it. We embraced whatever decision we’re going to get, he’s been through a lot and there’s no looking back right now.”
