Knowshon Moreno the Next Matt Forte?

August 11, 2009 – 8:00 am by Lance Zimmerman

Denver Broncos Quarterback Kyle Orton might have Chicago Bears Running Back Matt Forte to thank for his starting gig this season. Without Forte last season, more would have been asked of Orton, who had about as much talent at wide receiver as a mediocre college team (sorry Devin Hester). Orton however will have about as polar opposite talent-wise as you can get at the wide receiver position as the new signal caller for the Broncos. Eddie Royal and Brandon Marshall are both capable of huge seasons. Orton however will have to rely on the ground game as well, and rookie Knowshon Moreno could be the first featured back in Denver since Clinton Portis.

If you want a piece of advice from a self proclaimed fantasy expert, and aren’t we all at this point in the season, don’t sleep on Moreno. If he’s there in the 5th, he might be the smartest gamble out there.

Kyle Orton joined The Scott Van Pelt Show on ESPN Radio to discuss the Broncos upcoming season and how the team is coming together thus far.

Orton was asked about Knowshon Moreno missing the first part of training camp:

“He’s a special player and obviously he missed the first week of camp but he was here through all the spring ball and he’s a bright guy so I don’t think he’s going to have too much catching up to do.”

On if the media makes too much out of the learning curve from college to the pro game:

“Somewhat. For me, I played my rookie year as a quarterback and I know I certainly wasn’t ready. So from personally experience, yes, but I think there are some positions and not necessarily every position but there are some positions you can come in as a young guy and be successful. We had a running back in Matt Forte last year in Chicago who was able to do that and I think you can do that at a young age at that position.”

Orton was asked of the upheaval of his life in general after being traded from the Bears to the Broncos:

“I certainly wasn’t paying too much attention to the whole trade talk and everything in the off season. I try not to pay attention to that stuff. When it happened, it was surprising to me and my wife, and kind of jolting. We were very established in the community in Chicago and I had a lot of good friends on that football team. Your initial shock is quite incredible but when you get out here and fall in love with this community and have such great teammates and really just a first class organization, it’s all been for the good.”
