Joe Girardi: I Can’t Believe We’re Going Back On A 10-Day Road Trip
August 12, 2009 – 8:45 am by Tas MelasIs it just me or are the Yankees harder to hate right now? I really want to despise them as I, and many, many other baseball fans have for years, but they seem more likable. I don’t know what it is, they still have a good majority of their players from seasons past, but I can’t find the energy to shake my fist at them. Even Alex Rodriguez is more likable. Yeah, I know, Alex Rodriguez – how can anyone possibly like him? Listen, I don’t have the answers, but this team is just shutting their mouths and playing spectacular ball. Maybe I find them endearing because they started a little slowly and somehow found a way to compile the best record in baseball (as of today). Or, maybe, I’m getting old and soft. Yeah, that’s probably it. Joe Girardi joined Mike Francesa on WFAN in New York to discuss Chad Gaudin’s role the rest of the season, why winning in Boston was so important, and his take on the Yanks’ upcoming roadie.
His thoughts on the Yankees’ upcoming road trip:
“I can’t believe we’re going back on a 10-day road trip, seems like we just got home, that’s my thought. I mean, it’s an important road trip because you want to continue to play well and win series, because we’re going in to Boston and we know how tough of a place that is to play. So, you want to do whatever you can to keep the lead where it’s at or continue to try and stretch it out a little more.”
On the importance of winning in Boston over the weekend:
“I think it was important and I think probably the most important game was the first one (Host: Just to get that streak over with). Just so we can have the questions stop being asked when we were gonna beat ‘em. So, I think it was real important to our club because we won tough games, our pitchers matched their pitchers, zeroes, for a long time, and I think it was real important.”
On Chad Gaudin’s role the rest of the season:
“There’s a chance you’re gonna see him spot start. He’s gonna be in the bullpen tonight and he can do anything from long to short because he’s been built up, but there’s a shot that you’ll see him spot start.”
