Jerry Jones Is Loving The Cowboys’ New Stadium
August 18, 2009 – 10:30 am by Tas MelasWhy wouldn’t Jerry absolutely adore what he’s done? Texas Stadium looks absolutely ridiculous; Jones has taken architectural ideas from many world structures and created a gorgeous and unique piece of work. I’m not sure it will come through on the tube, but the idea to have high, gaping viewing areas from the concourse on to the field is fantastic. It definitely looks like more like an architect’s blueprint rather than a football stadium. Jerry Jones joined KRLD in Dallas to discuss what he loves about the structure, the item in the building connected to Celine Dion, and the $29 ticket offer for people to stand in the concourses and watch.
On his most treasured aspect of the stadium:
“The capacity of it; the ability to put over 100,000 fans in there anytime we want to. So, that’s a major plus because that’s gonna give a lot of fans the chance to see the NFL, to see the Cowboys, and to see their team play that otherwise might not have. So, that’s a big plus. I think the architecture, the entrances, over 60,000 of our fans will come through each of the retractable huge glass doors that stand about 150 feet high and 180 feet long. Those completely retract and give an openness out there on to the field ’cause it’s at ground level. And, then I think the four entrances as you come through, and we’ve gone through a lot of trouble, a lot of expense, used a lot of ocean front real estate that could have been seats or suites, and we used it to open it up to the field. So, every entry point at ground level is wide open to the field, and there’s no suites at that level, there’s no obstruction, you can go all around the stadium and look at the field.”
On bringing in fans for $29 a ticket for standing room just outside the entrance ways to the field:
“It’s like the party on the 18th green… It’s like putting it right there in the stadium because everybody will be open to the field and open to move around, and it’s gonna be an exciting place. And, it’s gonna create a collegiate atmosphere that we’re excited about, the NFL is excited about it, our commissioner is excited about because other NFL stadiums don’t have the size to do this and this will allow us to bring fans in at a price point that we’ve always wanted to do in the NFL, whether it’s the Super Bowl or whether it’s one of our big games that we have each year. But, I think we’ll do it a lot, I think we’ll have over 100,00 people and that’s me thinking and me wishing, and I think we’ll do that because we’ve always sold our stadium out.”
On where he got the inspiration for the video board:
“The huge hung center digital board, I really got that from Las Vegas from watching the Celine Dion show… With the way she was structured with her performance, with her entertaining live there right in front of you with the huge Mitsubishi screen right behind her. When I walked out of there, I knew I had seen her not only in person, but seen her as she was depicted on the screen, which wasn’t 20 or 30 feet from her behind her.”
