Bernard Berrian: Our Offense Is Respected Now Because Of Favre

August 20, 2009 – 11:50 am by Tas Melas

I know the way Brett was brought in wasn’t right; it does absolutely no good for a football team to have this issue hanging over its head for months on end.  We’ve seen how it affected locker rooms in Green Bay, New York, and now there are early rumblings of players being unhappy in Minnesota.  On the field though, if Brett is in some kind of shape, people really have to fear the purple.  Mark Chmura pointed out (transcribed on SRI) that Favre did not prepare for NFL football while working out on his own.  I have to disagree with that and assume he learned from last year’s ugly start in New York.  As Berrian points out below on Fox Sports Radio with Petros and Money, the arm is still there.  This Vikes team is a far better unit top to bottom than the Jets were last season.  The defense and running back are obviously far superior; Favre put himself in a position to win right now.  I would think he would be ready to take that opportunity and run with it after failing last season.  Berrian also discussed the respect the Vikes’ offense will get around the league and how much say the players had in this decision.

On Favre’s workouts thus far:

“The first day, I was out there when he was throwing the ball around.  He was actually, both practices were good, they were taped, and he had really good practices.  The arm strength is there so I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the arm as of now.  He’s throwing the ball deep and very far down the field, he’s hummed it, I heard he hummed it today, about 40 yards down the field today.  So, the arm strength is definitely there, obviously he knows the offense, so everything is set.”

Does Favre legitimize your offense?

“Yeah, it’s a legitimate threat; he can get the ball down the field.  Our other quarterbacks are capable of doing that too, it’s just the respect factor that you get with Brett I think is the biggest thing.  Now, they’re really looking at us as a legitimate offense as opposed to an illegitimate threat.”

On if he or other players advise management of who they should pick up, drop, etcetera:

“We don’t get a say on who’s gonna be on the team or who gets cut anyways, that’s the business part, that’s management.  We play the game and until we get those types of positions, we can’t really say anything about it anyway.  There’s nothing you can really do to affect it, I mean, you can always have a say but is it really gonna impact their thoughts?”
