Mike Singletary: Same Old News Regarding The Quarterbacks

August 20, 2009 – 10:00 am by Tas Melas

Another year, another quarterback “controversy” in San Francisco; I throw the word controversy in quotes because there is absolutely nothing controversial about it.  The Niners know what they’re getting in Shaun Hill – what the 29-year-old can do is be average.  Fairly solid, but nothing spectacular.  From an outsider’s perspective, it seems like the team would be happy going in to the season with Hill as its starter, but they won’t declare it because they’d be happy if Alex Smith jumped up and took the job.  Same old story in San Fran.  It has nothing to do with Smith coming off a year he sat out because of injury, the coaching staff knows what they have behind center, but they’re just not that thrilled with it.  Content, but no ear-to-ear grin, that’s for sure.  Niners’ head coach Mike Singletary joined KNBR to discuss if the race changed after game one of the preseason, why Smith got more snaps, if watching game film changed his perception each QB’s performance, and whether or not he’s concerned with the zero sacks his team recorded.

On Smith getting more reps during the game:

“I think when we had Shaun go out on the field and the time that he was out there, there was just a nice long drive and we had a chance to see what we wanted to see.  Alex got in and it was kind of a series here, another series there, three plays here, four plays here.  It just worked out a little differently, but no meaning went into that.”

On the quarterback competition:

“I think it’s the same as what I said after the game.  I looked at it on the sideline and when I looked at the film, it sort of verified and confirmed what I thought I saw.”

On the rotation for the next game:

“We’re going to look at it and we’ll make a decision on how we’re going to rotate.  All we know is they’ll pretty much get the same opportunity behind the first string offensive line, and we’ll go from there.”

On getting no sacks in the first preseason game:

“It’s not a concern.  I know the sacks will come, but sacks cause turnovers.  We were able to get three, so we were able to get turnovers and not the sacks, but they will come.”
