Al Harris Continues To Under Promise and Over Deliver
August 27, 2009 – 6:30 am by Michael Bean
Green Bay Packers cornerback Al Harris is widely considered one of the best cover corners in all of the National Football League. The 12-year veteran may not put up gaudy interception statistics year in and year out, but he’s as good as any in the business playing physical bump-and-run coverage at the line of scrimmage and he holds his own in the running game as well. The 2-time Pro Bowler joined KTAR in Phoenix to talk about the Packers upcoming preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals in Glendale this Friday. Harris discussed the upcoming game between what should be two of the more explosive offenses in the NFC, as well as Green Bay’s upcoming season. Harris also commented on former teammate Brett Favre and his return to the league with the rival Minnesota Vikings, how he thinks Green Bay’s wide receiving corps stacks up against Arizona’s and on the solid job he thought Aaron Rodgers did in his first year as the starter in Green Bay.
On quarterback Aaron Rodgers and how he thought he performed in his first full year as a starter:
“I think Aaron had a great year. He did a lot of things right and proved he is an elite quarterback in this league.”
On Green Bay’s seven losses last year that came after they held a late lead:
“Well, yeah you know how this league is and it happens that way. So we just hope that everybody writes us off and takes us lightly.”
On what his thoughts were regarding Brett Favre’s signing in Minnesota:
“Well, you know, I didn’t think anything other than good for Brett. You know, the decisions he’s made, he made for a reason. He still wants to play and provide for his family. So I had no negative thoughts. I didn’t really think about it, it was just good for Brett. I’m happy for him that he’s getting a chance to do what he loves to do.”
On how his attitude may differ from those Packers fans who are upset Favre’s wearing the uniform of a longtime Green Bay divisional rival:
“Well I don’t know. A lot of fans don’t live in his household and a lot of fans haven’t played for 17, 18 years. So I don’t know what the fans are thinking; I don’t know what Brett is thinking. All I can say is that I’m happy for him that he’s getting a chance to do what he loves to do.”
On Packers receivers Greg Jennings and Donald Driver and how they perhaps stack up to the dynamic duo of Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin out in Phoenix:
“Yeah, him and Donald. Both of those guys, they’re awesome. The group in Arizona and our group have the best combination 1st, 2nd and 3rd down receiving corps in the NFL.”
