Lance Moore Returns From Surgery, Ready To Contribute To Saints Explosive Offense
September 1, 2009 – 9:15 am by Michael Bean
Being that I grew up watching Drew Brees accomplish ridiculous athletic feats since about the age of 11, I’m more inclined to give him the lion’s share of the credit for Lance Moore’s breakout season last year at wide receiver for the New Orleans Saints. Brees is that good and I’ve known it for quite some time. Nevertheless, Moore deserves ample credit for filling the void left in the Saints passing game last season when Marques Colston was lost for injury. Moore caught 79 passes for 982 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2008, his third year in the NFL since graduating from Toledo in 2005. Moore may get fewer opportunities this coming year with Colston, Jeremy Shockey and Robert Meachem all in the fold and competing for looks from Brees, but considering just how much New Orleans throws the ball, Moore could still very well have a solid season even if his offensive teammates were to stay healthy around him. Moore joined WWL in New Orleans to talk about the upcoming season.
On if his successful preseason debut makes him confident that he’s ready to go for the 2009 regular season, which begins for New Orleans two Sundays from now against Detroit:
“Oh yeah, definitely. I didn’t even really think about my shoulder at all during the game. And that’s a great thing. If you asked me the same question about four or five weeks ago, I probably would have thought about it for a little bit. That just goes to show that the doctor did a great job, the trainers here did a good job of helping me rehab, and you know, I feel good.”
On if he was satisfied with the Saints thumping of Oakland and if it was particularly promising for him individually that he was able to take some hits out there and resume playing confidently and aggressively:
“Well, getting hit is never a good thing, but I guess it was a good thing in this case because I hadn’t really been tackled to the ground too much. It felt good to get out there, be out there, enjoying myself with my guys, my teammates and just being in a game atmosphere. It felt great and definitely be back in the end zone – hopefully I’ll be back much more this year.”
On if there was any added excitement being that it was his first action this preseason since offseason surgery:
“Oh yeah, I definitely felt great. Standing and watching games is definitely not for me. You know, I love being out there and feel the battle with my guys and I just enjoyed myself.”
