Matt Schaub On Beating And Beating Up On The Titans: “You can’t just take it from a team like that. You’ve got to bring it to them too.”September 21, 2009 – 2:05 pm by Michael Bean
That’s more like it for the Houston Texans. Heading in to the 2009 season, many people thought that the Texans were finally ready to compete for an AFC South crown and the franchise’s first playoff berth. The defense was supposed to be solid, but it was Houston’s offense that was really highly regarded. As they have done so many times though since joining the league, the Texans disappointed in Week 1, losing at home to the New York Jets. This week, the Texans proclaimed not to count them out just because they sputtered out of the gates. They handled the defending AFC South champion Tennessee Titans 34-31 in Nashville behind four Matt Schaub touchdown passes . Schaub finished with 357 yards on 25-39 passes. Schaub joined KILT in Houston to talk about the huge road win, getting the offense back on track after a down week the game before and what the Texans need to do to keep things going next week against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
On how he and the Texans offense was able to have so much success against a usually formidable Titans defense:
“I was pretty comfortable the whole game. It’s a team we know well and as a group they’re a really, good defense. And they rotate a lot of guys on their defensive line, but they’re very active and relentless trying to get to the quarterback. And we know that and our guys stepped up and did a great job fighting their tail off the whole game. And it was just a matter of letting my guys work down the field and we were able to get some deep plays going.”
On the fight that broke out between the two teams:
“That’s what it takes against a team like that. You’ve got to be willing to play four physical quarters of football across the board and we were able to do that. You know, you can’t just take it from a team like that. You’ve got to bring it to them too.”
On keeping himself and his teammates composed and calm early on as they were struggling on both sides of the ball and trailing to the Titans:
“We just kept it together and kept playing football. You know, there was no panic. We just had a sense of urgency to get something going and to get some drives going and just take it down and score. Nobody ever panicked or anything like that. We just kept playing ball, and there’s a lot football to be played. You know, it’s only the 1st quarter there, maybe the beginning of the 2nd quarter and we’re just going to keep playing.”
