Antrel Rolle On 83-Yard Blocked Field Goal Return Touchdown: “I just happened to be the fortunate one again in the right place at the right time and I just made a play on the ball.”

September 22, 2009 – 6:15 am by Michael Bean

After Week 1 of the 2009 NFL season, it seemed safe to say that the defending NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals were probably not destined for a repeat trip to the Super Bowl.  Kurt Warner looked flustered by a tenacious San Francisco 49ers defense last week and most folks, myself included, were ready to pencil them in for seven to nine wins at best.  Well, one week later and that kind of talk may be a bit premature.  The Cardinals traveled to Jacksonville on Sunday and defeated the Jaguars 31-17 in a game they really needed to win.  Kurt Warner was much better (he set a single-game completion % record), but so was the Cardinals defense.  Arizona’s defense forced four Jacksonville turnovers and held the Jags under wraps for much of the game until two late touchdown drives made the score closer than it really was.  One of those fumbles was recovered by Pro Bowl safety Antrel Rolle, who also happened to return a blocked field goal attempt 83 yards in the 2nd quarter to give the Cards a 17-3.  Rolle joined KTAR in Phoenix to talk about his big game individually, the important win for his team and how they’ll need to be even better – particularly at closing out games – beginning next week when they host the always-tough Indianapolis Colts.

On if the team was starting to doubt itself after not winning a preseason game then losing the opener against San Francisco:

“No, not at all. You know, it was a great game and something we always expect going in to San Francisco.  In my opinion, that was a game we could have won.  We made a few careless mistakes, but a lot of teams around the league could say the same thing.  But that’s part of football week in and week out – you never know what you’re going to get.  But it’s a 16 game season and one game should not dictate whether or not you become down on yourself.”

On the Cardinals surprisingly strong rushing defense to start the year:

“Yeah, that’s something we’ve got to put a strong point of emphasis on also, which is trying to shut down the run. Because we know an effective offense is a running offense.”

On his huge touchdown return following a blocked field goal attempt by the Jaguars:

“Yeah, I was nicked up after the game, so my knee was pretty swollen like a horn.  But, you know, it was just a reaction play. There was great pressure up front with Calais Campbell and Gabe Watson – and pretty much our whole defensive line – they made tremendous pressure.  And Calais was able to get his long arms up there and get the block. I just happened to be the fortunate one again in the right place at the right time and I just made a play on the ball.”

On the big game Arizona has next week at home on Sunday Night Football against the Colts:

“Oh, absolutely.  We’re going to go out there and we’re going to play ball.  That’s something as athletes we’re going to do – we’re going to go out and play all three phases of the game – offense, defense and special teams.  And may the best team win on Sunday.”
