Kerry Rhodes: ‘It Was a Big Win For Us. We Were Very Happy After the Game.’

September 22, 2009 – 8:50 am by Jimmy Shapiro

SRI continues to work in new writers. This post is courtesy of Tim Gunter of 790 the Zone in Atlanta.  Did the Jets “embarrass” the Patriots like Kerry Rhodes said they would?  I wouldn’t necessarily agree, but they did send a message to the Patriots that they will be the team to beat in the AFC East this season.  With a new head coach, Rex Ryan, the Jets were looking to change the mindset of the team and go out and beat the Patriots who have manhandled them for 8 straight games in the Meadowlands.  The Jets defense did manage to hold New England to 3 field goals and keep them out of the end zone.  In fact, the Jets defense has yet to allow an offensive touchdown this season.

What a difference a year makes.  This time last season, the Jets had a 1-1 record and had already given up three offensive touchdowns and had an ailing veteran quarterback with a torn biceps.  I don’t know if Kerry Rhodes’ trash talking actually helped or not on the field, but it sure garnered media attention off the field.  One thing I do know is that the Jets will be a playoff team in 2009 and they are here to stay.

Kerry Rhodes joined ESPN NY with Brandon Tierney to talk about him backing up the trash talking from last week with the game Sunday, whether he gets the sense that the Patriots dynasty is crumbling, what it was like in the locker room 10 minutes before they came out of the tunnel, the scene in the locker room 10 minutes after the game, what make Darrelle Revis so good, and what he thought about the trash talking from last week and when Rodney Harrison jumped in.

On him backing up the trash talking from last week with the game Sunday:

“Yeah that was the plan it was a great team effort and we are just trying to keep on moving. It’s not a big deal.”

On whether he gets the sense that the Patriots dynasty is crumbling:

“No, I wouldn’t say that.  They are still a good team but they played us tough.  They were hard and it was a war out there.  I mean I got to…I am in here getting treatment now just to prove it.  It was a fun game.  The emotion was high.  The crowd was into it and I think both sides played hard.”

On what it was like in the locker room 10 minutes before they came out of the tunnel:

“Man it was just ready to go out there and prove what we have been talking about.  It was great that all of the players were behind me and all of the coaches were behind the comments that we made and I made.  You know everybody was just ready to prove it and go out there and play.  We were done with the talking and go out there and show the world that what we have been working on and what we mean when we say play like a Jet. That was all we were thinking about.”

On the scene in the locker room 10 minutes after the game:

“Ten minutes after, like I said, it was calm. It was a big win for us.  We were very happy after the game at the time but once we got back to the locker room we knew it was just 1 game with 14 more to go.  You can only celebrate in the NFL for only a couple of minutes because you got to get back to focus and get ready for the next game.  That’s where we were.”

On what make Darrelle Revis so good:

“I mean he is a good player. What he does it work at on receivers on the second line.  He is such a strong guy and he has great ball skills.  Once he goes to the line and plays physical with them, he usually takes them out of the game.  Like you said, mixing man coverage has helped him out some.  For the most part he is doing what he does.  He is a good player man.”

On the trash talking from last week and when Rodney Harrison jumped in:

“It was fun.  They were actually paying attention to what was going on.  You are supposed to be an analyst.  He is supposed to be partial to everything.  The fact that he was getting into it just tells you how big the rivalry is.  Even the players that are outside and not playing anymore want to say something about it.  It was a good deal anyway.  I know him anyway.  The fact that he came to me and talked about it just shows how big this rivalry is.”
