Seneca Wallace: ‘The Biggest Thing for Me is to Not Turn the Ball Over.’
September 25, 2009 – 10:15 am by Jimmy Shapiro
This post was written by Tim Gunter of 790 the Zone in Atlanta. When Matt Hasselbeck went down with a broken rib last Sunday, Seneca Wallace came into the game to replace him. Hasselbeck hasn’t practiced all week so one would think that he won’t be suiting up this Sunday. Just in case Matt can’t go Seneca will definitely be ready. In case you are not familiar with Seneca, he is a 7th year pro from Iowa State where he was known to be a run first and pass second type of quarterback. Since coming into the league, he has worked hard each and every year to become a pocket passer. You can tell from this past Sunday that he stays in the pocket and lets the plays develop rather than run like he did in his first couple of years in the NFL. Seneca will have to be patient this week with the stingy Bears defense because they won’t give you anything. If Seneca can keep from turning the ball over, the Seahawks will have a great chance to squeeze out a win in front of their home crowd.

Seneca joined KJR in Seattle the way he played this past Sunday, if he could change one thing from this past Sunday what it would be, whether he has decided not to scramble anymore, what problems the Bears present this Sunday, and the timeline as to when the Seahawks will announce that he is starting.
On the way he played this past Sunday:
“I think I did alright. There is some things that obviously can get better. That just comes with practice and timing and things like that. Once you go in a game like that as a backup you just try to go in and score points and move the ball as best as you can. Not try to put your offense in a bad situation.”
On if he could change one thing from this past Sunday what it would be:
“Just probably take back the interceptions probably. I think that the biggest thing for me is to not turn the ball over. Give them a better opportunity to catch the ball and throw the ball high. (Host: I thought the ball was thrown high myself.) It was thrown high. It was a difficult catch for him. If he would have came down with it would have been a great catch. If I put it in a better area for him so he just has to adjust to catch it I think we got a better chance.”
On whether he has decided not to scramble anymore:
“It probably just seems that way. In this offense or any offense, except Pittsburgh probably, it’s about timing. You got to stay in the pocket sometimes and let things develop. If things don’t develop then that is when you use your legs. It’s a timing thing. A clock kind of goes off in your head to let you know that it’s time to try to get out the pocket and create something on the run.”
On what problems the Bears present this Sunday:
“They still are going to come out and play hard regardless of if Urlacher is in there or not. They fly around. They are ball hogs and like to fly around and take the ball away… We just have to come out and try to hit them hit them first on offense. (Host: Are they a blitzing team or do they get pressure with 4 guys?) Not really a blitzing team. They are going to do some things that are going to cause some difficulties at times blitzing obviously. They like to put a lot of pressure on you up front with the front four.”
On the timeline as to when the Seahawks will announce that he is starting:
“As of right now, I am just going day by day. I don’t really know yet.”
