Jason Campbell On Being The Team That The Detroit Lions Finally Won Against: ” If this wasn’t a rude awakening enough, then I don’t know what is.”

Wow. It doesn’t get any more embarrassing than losing to the Detroit Lions, a franchise that hadn’t experienced the joy of victory since December of 2007. That’s exactly what the Washington Redskins did on Sunday, falling 19-14 to the Lions at Ford Field. Just like last week, when the Redskins squeaked out an unimpressive 9-7 victory over the St. Louis Rams, Washington again failed to make any big plays on either side of the ball. The Redskins offense was only on the field for 23+ minutes compared to nearly 37 for Detroit, and if not for some late yardage in garbage time, the Skins would have been woefully out-gained for the game by Detroit as well. Throw in 9 penalties and the Redskins simply played too sloppily to win on the road in this competitive league. There were some positives from the loss though – Jason Campbell played pretty well, completing 27 of 41 passes for 340 yards and 2 TDs. He did have a costly interception though and was poor on 3rd down. Campbell joined 106.7 The Fan in Washington D.C. to talk about the humbling loss, how the ‘Skins have to dig deeper than ever and move on from this loss, and about whether or not the team is missing something emotionally or leadership-wise.

On how he’s dealing with the loss emotionally:

“Emotionally, I’m doing good man. I just hate to be in the position we’re in right now, the way we lost the game yesterday, not the fact that it was Detroit, just the fact that we lost the game.”

On what happened to the Skins in the 1st half when the fell behind early after having a great chance to take an early lead:

“In the first half, we came out in the first half and got the ball offensively and we drove the ball down the field and we got to the 1 yard line. And I think the thinking behind it was okay, we can punch it in here, get a touchdown, we take some confidence out of them, we take the air out of the stadium for them. If we don’t get it, the worst scenario is they get the ball on the 1 yard line. The worst, we figure they have to punt the ball and we get it back at the 50. But they end up going 99 yards and scoring, so you know, it’s kind of hit or miss there. Some folks want to take the field goal there but I think the thinking was there – if you don’t get it, they’re backed all the way up on the 1 and you know, with a young quarterback and everything, we’d get the ball back at midfield.”

On how the Redskins move on from this horrible loss and use it is motivation for the remainder of the still young season:

“We have no choice, we’ve got to get better. We’ve got to play better and we’ve got to play together.  You know, we can’t be out there doing our own things, we can’t be out there, you know, because what you do effects the other 10 guys, so we got to be sure we’re all doing the same thing and being on page and just understand that every play’s not going to be the perfect play. But if you continue to grind and grind together, you’ll bust some of them. And just talking to the guys, you’ve got to feel that you can look at this 10 games from now and be like, it doesn’t have to be a win that helped change the season, sometimes a loss can help change a season. Because if this wasn’t a rude awakening enough, then I don’t know what is.  So I think this is a chance for us to rebound and regroup and start fresh. You know, it’s still early in the season, we’re 1-2. This is a time that’s going to test your faith, it’s going to test your character. You know, what kind of character do you have? Anyone can ride high and feel good about what you’re doing when it’s all going good and you’re just sitting here winning games right and left.  But when you’re in a storm and you’re in testing times like we are now, now the true character and the true everything will come out.”
