The Bears Would Be 2-1 With Kyle Orton Too

September 29, 2009 – 11:30 am by Jimmy Shapiro

The Jay Cutler trade in the offseason was supposed to turn the fortunes of two franchises upside down.  To quote Dennis Green (since I don’t want to get sued), “They are what we thought they were”!  Jay Cutler has a great arm and will improve the Bears passing game, but he can also lose a game for a team with his gunslinging ways.  Sort of reminds me of Drew Bledsoe in that way.  Kyle Orton is a quarterback that just manages games and won’t try to lose the game for you.  Just like Trent Dilfer for the 2000 Ravens.  Would the records be reversed for either team if the trade never happened?  I doubt it.

While I’d much rather have Jay Cutler than Kyle Orton, I believe you can be successful with both quarterbacks as long as you have the right supporting cast around them.  Jay Cutler joined ESPN Radio Chicago and talks about the comeback win against the Seahawks, the opening game against the Packers, his receiving corp, and his body language in press conferences.

What were you saying in the huddle, down 19-17 with 5 minutes and change left?

Well I mean I couldn’t say much cause really you couldn’t hear anything in the huddle cause it was so loud.  So I was kind of screaming at the guys, just so everyone could hear me.  Um you know, we were confident.  I felt good about the situation we were in.  We had a good feeling for what they were doing I thought we could move the ball on them.”

Does the game against Green Bay feel like it was 2-3 years ago at this point?

“No, no it definitely was a couple weeks ago I remember it well.  It left a bad taste in my mouth, to go out there 1st game like that and perform.  Perform like that, you know, it was embarrassing because that’s not the way I play.  Some of it was bad breaks or it was my fault. So it’s been good for us to be able to rebound the last 2 weeks.”

How surprised are you that your receiving core has developed as quickly as they have?

“Uh…Zero. And now you know everyone is going to jump on the bandwagon, which is fine, but those guys have been performing like that since I got here.  I told everyone we weren’t going to have a problem with receivers if the guys got the job done, and they have.  It’s been by committee.  Which I think he’s been great, we have been able to get the ball to a lot of different guys and let them make plays with it.  And you know the great thing about it in the 4th quarter whenever we need plays, those guys are there and there making it for us.

Has the talk about how you speak in a press conference bothered you?

“Yeah, my facial expressions, I talk too much on the field with people, I don’t talk enough, and I sit there and look bored.”

Are you surprised that so much has been made of it?

“You know, with all the media outlets it’s so opinionated these days and then people have so much time on their hands.  They got to say something different.  They got to sell papers.  They got to sell their show.  So, you’re going to get a lot of different stuff these days.  It doesn’t surprise me.  Then Chicago is a huge, huge market with great fans, but I mean winning takes care of everything.  So as long as you’re winning ball games I think you’re going to be ok.”
