Oregon Ducks Head Coach Chip Kelly After Road Rout Of Cal
September 30, 2009 – 2:15 pm by Michael Bean
Goodness, gracious. Can anyone figure out the Pac 10 this year? First USC loses to Washington, then Washington lays an egg at Stanford. Cal looks like they’re in the driver seat all of a sudden, then heads to Oregon only to get absolutely embarrassed by the Ducks 42-3. After dropping their opener against Boise State, the Ducks have looked pretty darn impressive. Since that opening loss, they beat a Purdue team that we learned had some spunk this past weekend, and a Utah team that many folks thought would be right in the thick of things come the end of the season. Both of those games were tightly contested though. Not this past Saturday. Chip Kelly’s Oregon Ducks dominated in all three phases of the game against previously #6 ranked Cal. Kelly joined The Dan Patrick Show to talk about the epic performance his team turned in in Berkeley, and what they need to do to build on the win and remain unscathed in the wacky and parity riddled Pac 10 conference.
On if he was surprised by the outcome:
“You know what, I don’t want to sound cocky or anything, but I wasn’t because of our week of preparation. We practiced as well as we’ve ever practiced here and our guys were just excited to go play. It was really, how hard our guys practiced showed up on Saturday.”
On what he thinks of Cal running back Jahvid Best before and after the blowout:
“I thought he was the best running back in the country. And he still scares me. He had a couple runs where if you give him a crease, he can take off and go. And he’s got great vision, great strength and outstanding speed. He still scared me even when we were up 30. You know, he kind of gets a lump in your throat when he touches the ball thinking he could break this and get them back in the game. We had nobody on our defense with more than 5 tackles; but we had 19 players who had between two tackles and five tackles. And that’s a testament really to how hard everybody on defense played.”
On what’s new with LeGarrette Blount, the player Kelly suspended for the year for throwing a punch during the opener against Boise State:
“LG practices with us. He’s been at all our practices, he’s attending classes and he’s working towards changing his image, in terms of all he can do is it as a teachable moment and move forward. And he’s done that. And people hopefully will…hopefully there will be an ending to this and it won’t be what you saw in Boise on September 3rd. He’s moved forward and understands what he has to do and he’s done everything that we’ve asked him to do since that incident transpired.”
On how good he thinks his team is:
“No, I don’t. I really don’t. I don’t think anybody does. I mean, it’s one of those years in college football where you know, every week I think four teams in the Top 10 lost last week. We’re not concerned – and it’s not just coach talk – you better play each week and not worry about anything else, and then we’ll pick our head up after December 3rd and see where we’ve landed.”
