This post was written by Zach Krantz of WQAM in Miami. Some experts thought if the New York Jets got through the first four games of the season at 2-2, it was a success. Now the team is 3-0 going into a big matchup with the New Orleans Saints and the confidence level is through the roof in the Jets locker room. The confidence comes from the Head Coach and his brass style, it comes from Rex Ryan. Ryan has brought this team a certain swagger that championship teams have, and they are proving that week in and week out so far this season.
The Jets beat the Texans handily 24-7 in week one in the debut of Rex Ryan and Mark Sanchez. Week 2 brought the big bad New England Patriots and the comments Ryan made about Belichick and his rings. The Jets backed him up with a 16-9 win. Smart play by Rookie Mark Sanchez and Ryan‘s aggressive defense have led the Jets to a 3-0 record, the fourth time in franchise history.
Rex Ryan joined Michael Kay on ESPN 1050 in New York to talk about the 3-0 start for his team, the swagger his team has in the locker room and with the media, the progression of Mark Sanchez and the upcoming game against the high powered New Orleans Saints.
Rex was asked about Jericho Cotchery’s comments that the Jets are the best team in the NFL:
“Well we got the best record in the game; we are tied with a bunch of guys or whatever. We feel like we can compete against anybody in the league and be successful against anybody. For him to make that statement you know, that’s great. There is no reason not to think that way.“
Asked how he felt after jumping out to a big lead and then squandering it to the Titans:
“Well I thought, ‘uh oh, man I can’t believe it’, but at no time in the game did I ever think that we were out of it. Definitely didn’t think that. I thought we were in the game all the way, I thought it was just a matter of time before we went back on top. And I wasn’t wrong by thinking that. You got to give credit, that team came in here, they were giving us everything they had, and they made some plays on us. Again I felt confident that our guys could rebound, I thought we showed a lot of guts, a lot of pride. And coming right back at them. After they scored, we took it right back and we really squashed them in the 4th quarter.”
Talking about the progression and maturation of Mark Sanchez:
“I think he is way ahead of the game, I think he made a dumb move by taking that guy on like he did, trying to be like Larry Csonka. We don’t need him to do that. He has got to be smart there and understand he is carrying the franchise with him. He has to protect himself as well as well as the football. But he is doing a great job, showing great poise, he is confident, he is a leader, and he is everything we were hoping we got when we drafted him.”
Asked when he looked at the schedule before the season if he is surprised to be 3-0 at this point:
“No. We knew we were playing some good football teams, but again I have a lot of confidence in the guys. I was really confident in the training camps. We really came together as a team, I think everybody sensed the same thing I did, that we could be an outstanding team and we don’t have to take a back seat to anybody in this league. Again, after we had the schedule that we have, and this week we have to go at New Orleans, there’s probably much easier opponents to face then New Orleans at their place. But I have confidence that our guys will be ready and this will be a fun game to watch.”
