Can Wade Phillips Turn It Around?

October 8, 2009 – 10:00 am by timgunter

Jerry Jones is not too pleased with how the 2009 Cowboys campaign has started.  His billion dollar stadium saw its first home loss on opening night, he got rid of Terrell Owens and now has an underachiever in Roy Williams as the #1 receiver, and the team has started off 2-2.  This past Sunday it didn’t seem like it was just the players not performing, the play calling by the coaches left you scratching your head if you are a Cowboys fan.

With the way the season has started it definitely looks like Wade Phillips’ days are numbered.  Coach-in-waiting, Jason Garrett, will look to bring the franchise back to its winning ways, but I am not sure if Jason Garrett can do it either.  Did you see them call 2 straight plays to throw right at Champ Bailey?  And when Wade Phillips was asked about it he said, “Maybe our plan wasn’t good enough or our execution.”  Sounds like a guy that is confident in mediocrity and if I were a Cowboys fan I would want him gone too.

Wade Phillips joined KRLD in Dallas to talk about whether the NFL rules protect the QB too much or if they make sense, how he is doing after Sunday’s game, feeling good about the defense, Tony Romo’s horrible third down efficiency rating, why he didn’t know Marion Barber was hurt in the game two weeks ago, going after Champ Bailey two times in a row and whether it made him think about it, about getting Romo out of the pocket to make plays, and the chance of Roy Williams playing on Sunday.

On whether the NFL rules protect the QB too much or if they make sense:

“Well I think they make sense.  We have tried to protect the quarterback a lot better than they do in college.  I mean they rough them up in college pretty good.  I think the rules are set…  Because a guy really can’t protect himself.  If a guy gets loose or a free blitz or anything the guy can’t protect himself and he is trying to throw the football.  I think the rules are good.”

On how he is doing after Sunday’s game:

“I am doing alright.  We’re starting on the next one so that is a good thing. “

On feeling good about the defense:

“Yeah I think we are getting stronger and stronger.  I think even the first game it was really the last quarter when they scored on first down that gave them 21 points instead of 14.  I think they are getting better and better.  We seem to be…  We have five new starters on defense and I think they are starting to gel and I think they are starting to do that.”

On Tony Romo’s horrible third down efficiency rating:

“I mean you can throw stats around…You can say that, but we are a lot higher percentage on third down as far as making third downs. That is certainly a key. We are not 31st in the league in the percentage of making third downs. You know everybody wants to use stats the way they want to use them.”

On why he didn’t know Marion Barber was hurt in the game two weeks ago:

“Well he wasn’t hurt.  He tightened up he told the coach.  He was still in the ball game so it wasn’t a situation where he was out or anybody had to say he was out.  The offensive coaches knew the situation so they put him in the situation here he was mainly on third downs helping block and protect for us so that is the way it was.”

On going after Champ Bailey two times in a row and whether it made him think about it:

“Like I said, we plan these things way ahead of time.  Maybe our plan wasn’t good enough or our execution.  We just didn’t get it done at the end there.  We had a couple of other plays there too that we didn’t score on.”

On the chance of Roy Williams playing on Sunday:

“Well we won’t know until later in the week probably.  His ribs are banged up.  He has 3 ribs that are banged up.  Gerald Sensabaugh had that a couple of weeks ago.  He had one so he ended up playing.  Roy’s is three times what Gerald’s was so we will see.”

  1. One Response to “Can Wade Phillips Turn It Around?”

  2. Roy Williams is just another example of the poor decision making that has been the Jerry Jones Cowboys for quite a while. Horrible draft picks, reckless QB yet a ball control type offense with a defense that is built to play with a lead or when a team feels they are forced to be one dimensional. Who cares about the rib it is about the football brain or lack thereof.
