Brandon Jacobs: “We didn’t play Giants football…”
October 20, 2009 – 2:00 pm by Bunk
Not much went right on Sunday for the New York Giants. In a matchup of undefeated teams at the Super Dome in New Orleans, the Giants were throttled by the New Orleans Saints 48-27. Obviously the Giants defense had no answer for Drew Brees and the Saints offense. That was surprising to some degree considering how well the Giants defense had played and how capable the Saints offense is, particularly at home. The vaunted Giants rushing attack, which had been carving up defenses and keeping opposing offenses off the field, was held in check by the Saints defense. Giants had just 84 yards on the ground. Brandon Jacobs had 33 of those yards on 7 carries, continuing his fairly pedestrian season compared to what many were expecting from him. Jacobs joined ESPN Radio New York to talk about the humiliating loss, how he didn’t think New Orleans was really as good as they looked and how his interaction with the media last week was unfairly portrayed.
On if he thinks the Saints are really that good:
“No, no they’re not. I mean they have a really good offense. Drew Brees and the line were hitting on all cylinders out there. They’re very good throwing the ball and can’t no one take that away from them. You got to get pressure on Drew Brees, and if you don’t he’ll stand back there all day on vacation and throw the ball.”
On if he thinks they missed an opportunity to gain a leg up on New Orleans for playoff seeding later in the year:
“We just didn’t as a team execute as well as we could on both sides of the ball. We didn’t play Giants football. I don’t know, they were alright, but they weren’t that good from stopping us from doing what we do.”
On what he would say about those who might think the Giants were just beating up on lowly teams to start the year and were exposed during their first true test of the season:
“Well, people are going to look at it they way they want to look at it. Everybody’s got an opinion, but we’re a good football team and we know that and we’ll find out at the end of the year where we’re standing and we’ll let people talk then. We got a long season left, we’ll see what happens. And those teams, Kansas City and Oakland just came out yesterday with some big wins.”
On how his interaction with the media last week was portrayed last week when he walked away from reporters:
“Well it was all bull, to be honest with you. I was there, did the interviews, I answered a lot of questions and they kept beating on the same dead, dead horse. You know what I mean? They kept beating. Finally I was like that’s enough of this man. I’m done. That’s all it was. There’’s no excuse for that to happen – asking a guy the same question in different ways. I’m not stupid. I’m not one of the smartest guys in the world, but I’m not stupid. I just had enough of that.”
