Lee Evans: “This win means a lot. It’s our first divisional win in a couple of years”

October 20, 2009 – 9:45 am by Jimmy Shapiro

The Buffalo Bills once were a proud franchise making it to 4 straight Super Bowls in the 90’s; they haven’t made the playoffs since 1999.   One of the stars on this team is Lee Evans who has proven in the last few years that he is an elite WR in the NFL.   A bad start to the season for the Bills was made a little better with a big win Sunday versus the Jets.   Evans helped the Bills cause catching four balls for 68 yards and finding the end zone for the game tying touchdown.   Evans has struggled for consistency in the Bills’ struggling offense.   He’s averaged 38 yards in six games and has two touchdowns for the season.  The Bills are now 2-4 on the season.

(Editor’s note:  The best part about this post was searching for a Lee Evans picture and finding this actor with the exact same name.

Lee Evans joined the Fan 590 in Toronto to talk about the big win versus the Jets, how the offense worked with Ryan Fitzpatrick, and what the expectations are for the rest of the season.

Asked what worked against the Jets that didn’t work the week before against the Browns:

“It was just one of those games where we had some things go our way and I think when it really came down to it, guys made plays in crucial situations.  The bottom line is in a tight game like that, the game is going back and forth, both teams going back and forth, it comes down to a big play being made and our defense stepped up and our special teams finished them off.”

Asked about what he thinks about the Bills offense so far this season:

“It’s certainly been a work in progress.  Even from the beginning of the season when we fired our offensive coordinator, things changed then.  We did a good job of trying to hone in on what we had and what we wanted to do, get things moving in the right direction.  We did that for the first couple games and we struggled for the last few games.  Now we are getting to the point in the season where the games are bigger and bigger if you want to make a playoff push.  Yesterday’s game was a big game for us,  I think the offense with Ryan coming in, he is somebody who has been part of this offense from day one, so he knows what’s going on.  He stepped in there and made some big plays, with a week of practice and I don’t know what Trent’s status is going to be.  It’s still a work in progress, but its showing signs of light, so hopefully we can just keep it rolling and put some more points on the board.”

Asked about his thoughts on the catch he made that was ruled out of bounds late in the game:

“I felt like I had possession of it the whole time, even going out of bounds when I hit the ground, the ball never moved.  I felt like I had possession of it the whole time.  Now I guess it’s not just the instant replay thing that they have, they have all kinds of monitors to zoom in and do all types of stuff.  So they were able to see something that I necessarily didn’t see or feel, but that’s the call that they made.”
