Jay Cutler: “It’s just a matter of us making mistakes and making costly mistakes.”

What to make of the Chicago Bears? There have been some nice victories – against Pittsburgh and at Seattle. But they have struggled away from Soldier Field, most recently losing to the Atlanta Falcons 21-14. Jay Cutler has had his moments, but he’s also thrown 7 interceptions, all of which have come on the road. Cutler threw two of those on Sunday in the Bears close loss to the Falcons. One of them was particularly costly – it was thrown inside the Falcons red zone at the 9 yard line with the Bears threatening to tie the game up. Cutler joined ESPN Radio Chicago to talk about the start of the season for the Bears, Chad OchoCinco’s recent comments about him on Twitter, why he thinks the Bears offense will iron out the kinks as the season progresses, and what the Bears need to do better if they’re going to steal a win from the Bengals on the road this coming Sunday.

On the back and forth he and Ocho Cinco recently had on Twitter:

“I’m about to bailout on that situation. He’s a, I mean Chad’s great, he’s a fabulous player. He’s a social media sensation so once Wednesday starts I’ll probably be out of that whole situation.”

On how he thought he played besides his costly red zone interception:

“We’ve got to get better. I’ve got to get better. The whole team in general we just got to do some things to help ourselves win ballgames. Offensively, we’re just not getting it done, it’s the turnovers and interceptions. The trouble in the red zone, you know they didn’t really do anything to stop us, you know I saw everything, you know the entire offense felt good about our game plan and what we had going into it. It’s just a matter of us making mistakes and making costly mistakes. You know turnovers and penalties in the red zone, you just can’t do that and expect to be a good offense”

On his relationship with Ron Turner and on how much freedom he has to change plays at the line of scrimmage:

“Yea, Ron is doing a good job. He asks for my opinion a lot during the game and whenever we’ve got time and I come to the sideline and they ask me how I feel about it and if I don’t like it and I say no, give me something else. Nine times out of 10 they will give me something else unless they feel very strongly about it so it’s a work in progress. Not only me and the entire offense but Ron too, he’s got some new weapons. He’s got a new quarterback and we’re all learning together. Luckily enough for us, there is still a lot of football left.”

On why Matt Forte and the running game hasn’t gotten going yet despite the addition of Cutler and the threat he poses in the passing game:

“Well, we’re not seeing a lot of two high, we’re just not seeing a lot of cover two yet. Which is understandable, people are going to do some different stuff against us and take some stuff away outside and make us run it and we’re seeing some crazy looks. We’re seeing a lot of safety blitzes and a lot of corner blitzes. We’re just seeing a wide array of stuff that is very typical early in the year. Teams are trying to find their identity defensively and once things kind of settle down and stuff and everyone gets into the groove offensively and defensively, then we’ll see what happens.”

On if he thinks teams are daring him to beat them with Chicago’s unheralded wide receivers:

“That’s fine, we hope for that and I enjoy that. Guys made a lot of plays against single high and zero coverage. The tight ends as well, we went downfield and made some plays against the blitz so we’re doing good things. The biggest thing is we just got to do things consistently. We’re just kind of up and down right now, we do some great things then we fall off with an interception or a penalty so we just need to get more consistent, which that will come.”

On if he is surprised by the Broncos start:

“Well, you know I get it a lot too. You know a lot of people think I’m wishing the worst for the Broncos and Josh McDaniels and I don’t. I watched the game last night, I have a lot of friends on the team and I talked to some of the guys afterward and congratulated them. They are playing really good football. You know I’m happy for those guys offensively and defensively. You know Eddie Royal had two special team touchdowns, you know anytime that happens you are doing good things. So they are playing well and you can’t really take anything away from them.”

On if he thinks Kyle Orton is performing so well as a result of having a fresh start and change of scenery:

“I don’t know. This league is funny. It’s all about timing, you could be one of the best payers in the league but if you’re not in the right system and you don’t have the right people around you ..There is just a lot of different aspects that go into making a player or breaking a player. So right now it’s working for Kyle, it’s working for Josh, it’s working for the Broncos, they have a good thing going.”
