Maurice Jones Drew: “We need to fight and figure out a way to win games.”
October 26, 2009 – 10:45 am by timgunterSince his days at UCLA, Maurice Jones-Drew has been living in the shadows of Reggie Bush. After all, Bush won a Heisman Trophy and was supposed to be the best thing since sliced bread when he was drafted 2nd overall by the New Orleans Saints. I am sure the Saints now wish they had drafted MJD because he has definitely had a better start to his career. Jones-Drew has twice as many touchdowns as Bush and for that he is a way better fantasy option. Can you believe MJD was the 60th overall pick in the ’06 draft? That just blows my mind! Four running backs were selected before him and not one of them has had a more promising start and has had the impact of Jones-Drew.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have had a mediocre start to the season. They are sitting at 3-3 just off of a bye and are poised to get off to a great start to their second half of the season against the defeated Tennessee Titans. A year after in which they were a sleeper pick to go to the Super Bowl, the Jaguars are in the same position they were last year and are still trying to recover from what was a horrible ’08-09 season. To right this ship and get the team back on course, my advice to the Jaguars coaches would be to give the ball to Jones-Drew and give it to him often. You do not want him second guessing the playcalling like he did a few weeks ago after that pitiful game against the Seahawks. I mean David Garrard is good but Jones-Drew is great! He needs to be the focal point of the offense not Holt or Sims-Walker. This year it looks as though the Colts are going to run away with the AFC South division but the Wild Card is still up for grabs. It will be up to MJD and the Jaguars if they want to take a run at the AFC Wild Card.
Maurice Jones-Drew joined The Dan Patrick Show to talk about what he does during his bye week, who his running backs are on his fantasy team, and him really thinking Reggie Bush is a decoy.
On who his running backs are on his fantasy team:
“I have myself, Matt Forte and I just picked up Mike Bell because I think he is going to have a big game this week.”
On who is fantasy quarterbacks are:
“Matt Schaub and Matt Cassel.”
When he scores two touchdowns and what he is thinking about his fantasy team:
“I got to score some more so we can win.”
On what the question that was asked when he responded with “I am the second-highest paid decoy in the NFL”:
“Well they had, they said…It wasn’t a question someone was just like: Well you are the highest-paid decoy I have ever seen. And I said 2nd highest.”
On him really thinking Reggie Bush is a decoy:
“Well I mean that was the whole thing when he was coming out. So I just kind of played off of that. Really I was just frustrated with what was going on. Going up there and getting embarrassed like that in Seattle and it isn’t anything I am accustomed to and I just wanted to let the guys know that losing isn’t anything that you want to get accustomed to here in Jacksonville. So regardless on what our team is or how young people say we are or whatever it is, we need to fight and figure out a way to win games.”
Whether he would let his son go to USC:
“Dad always makes the last decision in that situation. He doesn’t go to SC. There is only one college that he could go to. Everybody knows that.”
