Vincent Jackson: This Guy Is Good
October 29, 2009 – 8:45 am by timgunterIn my opinion, Vincent Jackson is one of the best wide receivers in the NFL today. This past Sunday, he torched a horrible Chiefs secondary for 142 yards and a touchdown. Even after the game he was thinking about what could have been if he hadn’t dropped a few passes or ran better routes. Not being satisfied after a good game is a great sign from a young player playing in a contract year. Jackson is set to make $620,000 this year and will be assured to make at least $8+ million for the next few seasons. If the Chargers want to lock up Jackson for the future, they are going to have to give up a boatload of cash to keep him there.
Vincent Jackson joined XX Sports Radio in San Diego to talk about how the team feels after winning by 30 points Sunday, whether the team is keeping an even keel after the win, and what he feels the team could have done better against the Chiefs.
On how the team feels after winning by 30 points Sunday:
“You know I think we are sitting at 3-3 and obviously not where we planned to be at the beginning of the season but we got quite a bit of football left. We are excited for this week’s game with a good Oakland team coming in our house. We always love to play at home in front of our fans. We are excited. This is a fresh season for us we are getting guys back healthy and we are just looking forward to winning one game at a time.”
On whether the team is keeping an even keel after the win:
“Oh of course. You enjoy it briefly and you go back and take what you can from it and you learn from it. Obviously there is going to be some mistakes made but you can enjoy some of the good things, the good plays that were made out there on both sides of the ball and you use that for next week. I am sure our coaches already began on Oakland. We have some stuff, played them already, to look at but they are definitely going to be a team to come in here with a point to prove and we have to be ready for that.”
Whether there was a Chiefs game he watched on film to get some pointers against the Chiefs secondary:
“I wouldn’t say one in particular but you know we took about probably their last three games and really broke those down pretty hard. Obviously Dallas had a good game passing the ball so our coaches definitely took something from that and there was a couple of other games where I think where we saw some things in the run game that would work well for us. I don’t think we key on one team but we use as much film as available and try to put together a package of runs and passes that would help us be successful.”
On what he feels the team could have done better against the Chiefs:
“Well I definitely think we left about two or three big pass plays out there in the first half. Not necessarily the fact that they did something defensively to stop us. It was just one of those things that comes up in the game where you are not going to hit everything. There was one play that at the end of the half I was out of bounds a little bit. The ball just kind of took me out of there and obviously they have the rule now where the defender can push you out of bounds so he kind of rolled me out of bounds. We could have scored there and obviously all of the possessions we had at the 10 and inside the 5 where we couldn’t get scores. You know if we just pound the ball in there or come away with some kind of points… Who knows what we could have put up.”
