David Duggan: “It was a punch. He beat the brakes off of me. Right upside the head. Boom!”
November 3, 2009 – 11:37 am by timgunterBuccaneers cornerback Aqib Talib was arrested in August for punching a cab driver in the head after a crazy night of drinking at a St. Petersburg club. Talib and his posse did the right thing and got a taxi cab to drive them back to their hotel in Tampa. The only problem was that Talib decided to go medieval on the taxi driver and drill him in the head while he was driving. When the Florida Highway Patrol arrived on the scene, he, at first, resisted arrest until he was threatened with pepper spray.
The cab driver, David Duggan, joined WDAE in Tampa to talk about what happened that night, whether it was a slap or a punch, where he was punched, and whether he is filing a lawsuit.
On what happened on the night in question:
“I was driving my car and going down the interstate all of sudden BAM hit back upside the head. (Host: Unprovoked? You didn’t say anything?) I didn’t say a word.”
On him thinking that he was being robbed:
“That is correct.”
On what happened after he was hit in the head:
“I swerved the car almost off of the interstate. It went in from the middle lane to the left lane to the right hand lane. Stopped the car got on the radio gave them my X-code. There were some words being said in the car I am not sure what was said and I am holding my head my ear was ringing. And after HP shows up and the handcuffs went on the two guys in the back seat. The guy that was sitting in the front he was with me with the Florida Highway Patrol and I went and said that one guy he was holding that guy while the other guy was hitting me and he took the handcuffs off of him and that is about what happened.”
Did the cop ask Talib to get out of the cab?:
“Yes sir.”
And he didn’t?:
“No he didn’t.”
At one point wasn’t he going to get tasered?:
“Um they were going to pepper spray him.”
On what the other guys were saying and if they were riled up:
“Um they were drinking… the two guys in the back. The guy in the front that was sitting next to me, I think his name was Carl, Mr. Carl, he was pretty quiet. No he was one of the more sober guys.”
On whether any of the guys told Talib to stop hitting him:
“Yeah the guy in the front was like: Hey yo man you are trying to kill us!”
On whether it was a slap or a punch:
“It was a punch. He beat the brakes off of me. Right upside the head. Boom! Knocked my hat right off and you know it was hard.”
On the report saying he went immediately to the hospital:
“No. I took myself to the hospital. My ear was ringing and a big knot on my head and my neck was hurting.”
Whether he was punched in the back of the head:
“Right on the side of the head like right on the ear and the neck and the neck part. He must have a big hand.”
On what has been going on since then:
“I have been going to the doctor and I have had an MRI and a MRI with contrast. I had some dried blood in one ear and some fluid in my left ear. It was like a concussion.”
Whether he is filing a lawsuit:
“I don’t have any comment on that but I am happy that the wheels of justice are finally coming into play. It took a while. I am out of work and frustrated and I don’t know why it happened.”
Whether he is out of work because he can’t drive a cab:
“Yeah I can’t you know. I just can’t.”
Why?:
“Fear.”
