Brandon Marshall: “Wide receivers come off as divas, but we are really the only position that can ask for the ball”
November 4, 2009 – 8:15 am by Zach Krantz
Earlier this week the Denver Broncos decided to rescind the fines levied on their Pro Bowl Wide Receiver Brandon Marshall that totaled about $73,000. These fines were put on him because of his behavior during the preseason. Marshall was suspended by Coach Josh McDaniels for conduct detrimental to the team, it came to a breaking point when Marshall went on to the practice field during warm-ups and was walking while the team was running and swatted down passes that were thrown to him. These were interpreted as signs of a disgruntled player who wanted out of his situation. Marshall then told reporters he was going to change his ways and be a good solider for his team.
Now let’s fast forward to the present day in Denver. The team is 6-1 and Marshall is now being caught hugging and high fiving his coach. It’s a big change of heart from demanding a trade and wanting out of Denver to loving life and playing like a warrior for that team. He has started four games for the Broncos and has 29 catches for 332 yards and four touchdowns. This doesn’t seem like a player who hates life where he is …or maybe this is a mask and tryout for the next season when he pulls his antics again. Brandon Marshall Joined the Dan Patrick Show to talk about his play so far this season, the way the Broncos are playing so far and the big matchup against the Steelers coming up on Monday Night.
Asked about the offense and how it looked conservative last week:
“Up until this game we have been very efficient, my job is just to catch balls. (DP interrupts: “Don’t do that Mr. Sports Soup, Are you afraid of my question?). No I am not afraid of your question, it’s the truth my job is catch balls, I can’t call it. I will say that we have a lot of explosive players on our side of the ball waiting to contribute.”
Asked how he can ask for the ball more without coming off as a diva:
“See I have a theory for that. my theory for that is wide receivers come off as divas, but we are really the only position that can ask for the ball, defensive guys can ask for the ball, quarterbacks have the ball, running backs have the ball anywhere from 10-25, 30 times a game, tight ends are right between wide receivers and lineman, so we are really the only position left to ask for the ball.”
Asked where he ranks Troy Polamalu on the list of guys to keep an eye on:
“He is definitely close to the top if not at the top. He is a guy that can make a play anywhere on the field no matter where he starts. He is a guy you need to figure where he is before the snap of the ball. (DP: Does he talk at all on the field?) Troy says nothing.”
Asked about the throwback uniforms there were a couple weeks back and his thought on them:
“Well you know those uniforms are a thing of the past, we don’t have to wear them again, but it was fun while we had them.”
