T.J. Houshmandzadeh: “Why would I be happy about us punting the ball and go to the sideline with a smile on my face”

Seattle was a team that I thought would be much better than they were a year ago. I thought their record from a season ago was a little deceiving because they played much of the year with a banged up offensive line, a banged up receiving corps and a banged up quarterback. They made a move this offseason to bring in T.J. Houshmandzadeh in hopes that he could help bolster their receiving corps and help out Matt Hasselbeck in the passing game. When he got to the Seattle, he guaranteed a top-five receiving season, a playoff appearance and a Pro Bowl. However, he’s not really on pace for any of those three. After three straight consistent seasons of over 90 catches in Cincinnati, Housh has 35 catches this season, has just one game where he topped the century mark in receiving yards and has just two touchdowns, both of those came in one game against Jacksonville. On top of that, the Seahawks are just 2 and 5 on the season and are third place in the wide open NFC West. Frustration is starting to build up for Seattle and Houshmandzadeh showed some of that frustration the sidelines this past weekend when he was seen yelling at Matt Hasselbeck.
T.J. Houshmandzadeh joined Deion Branch and Nate Burleson on their weekly segment on KJR in Seattle to talk about his frustrations that he showed on the sidelines and what has gone wrong through seven games in Seattle.
On the frustration that he showed on the sidelines Sunday:
“Obviously we talked about it yesterday. Here’s the thing. It’s a big game, it’s third down and we don’t get a completion, so I expressed myself. I’ve been doing this my whole career. Seattle is a conservative city so I guess when somebody acts that way, they frown upon that. That’s me, that’s who I am, that’s how I play. Why would I be happy about us punting the ball and go to the sideline with a smile on my face. I’m upset, I felt like we should’ve gotten the first down, we should’ve kept the drive going, it was a big game and I expressed myself. I’m not like anybody else, I’m gonna be myself. I’m not gonna change because the people want me to change. I’m gonna be me.”
On why he chose to come to Seattle:
“My take on the situation is we gotta play with confidence. Confidence is a big thing in professional sports period. If you feel like regardless of the way the game is going or score, that you can come back and win or you’re going to win, that’s what normally is going to happen. Everybody has to come with that confidence, everybody has to work. The coaches gotta have confidence. It’s not just us, it’s everybody. Once we develop that mentality, it’s good. We gotta string together one, two three wins in a row. We can’t win one, lose one. We string together some wins and you’ll see the change. I think coming out of preseason, we’re 4-0, everybody felt like ‘oh man can’t nobody touch us’ and we gotta get that confidence back.”
