Brian Dawkins: “I am a contact player, I have had my share of interceptions , but my thinking is I would like to lay the wood to somebody”
November 13, 2009 – 10:05 am by Zach KrantzHe seemed to be a lifetime Philadelphia Eagle, the hard hitting safety backed his words with his vicious hits on the field, but then the business side of football came into effect and he signed a free agent contract with the Broncos after 13 seasons in Philly. Brian Dawkins was the leader of the Eagles, he was known as the Wolverine or Weapon X. Wolverine was the low-key leader of the X-Men, a comic book action series, Dawkins was just that guy. He left Philly and signed with the Broncos before this past season.

The Broncos are a breath of fresh air this season though, starting the season a whopping 6-0 before losing the last two games. This weekend they have a game against a team that Dawkins knows pretty well from his NFC East days, the Washington Redskins (who is a team in turmoil as it is, ask DeAngelo Hall). So a homecoming for Dawkins and a chance to get the Broncos back on the right path after a scorching hot start.
Brian Dawkins joined Sports Radio 104.3 the Fan in Denver talking about his days in the NFC East, the Broncos hot start, and his inspiration to keep playing football.
Asked what his inspiration is to keep playing:
“My inspiration is I have been blessed to play this football game this many years. I still love it, the lord has continues to bless me. I just go out with that fire and that passion and go out and do what I can for my teammates every game and bring everything that I can to the table.”
Asked about the addition of veteran Ty Law to the team:
“Anytime that you have guys that have put together pretty good years…He has been the guy in different places in different places at different times, there is no ego involved. We are all trying to mesh together and he is bringing what he brings to the table and that’s that playmaking potential to get the ball in his hands and take it to the house. The communication with the veteran guy is a lot different than the younger guys and the gelling will take place that much sooner.”
Asked what is better, laying someone out or taking a ball to the house:
“I am a contact player, I have had my share of interceptions , but my thinking is I would like to lay the wood to somebody and it would cost him to fumble the ball and then we scoop it up and score. That would be the best feeling for me. The worst feeling is giving up a touchdown pass or something like that and then you lose the game. That’s like two negatives on top of one another.”
Asked what he wants people to think of him when it’s all said and done for Brian Dawkins:
“I think the thing that I would like people to say is he gave everything he had for the teams that he played for period. Every ounce of him, emotion, physical, you know he laid himself into offensive lineman going full speed. He gave himself up for the university so they can get sacks. He is a playmaker all over the place. So whatever that team needed for that time, for that game, he was able to be it with his god given ability. I think that would be a great way to go out.”
