Manny Pacquiao: Boxer, Actor and Singer?

November 13, 2009 – 9:45 am by Chris Fedor

Is there anything that Manny Pacquiao can’t do?  His accomplishments inside the ring are tremendous, what he has meant among Filipino people is unquestioned, he has a movie based on his life, he’s tried his hand with politics, he starred in a TV series and he’s actually a pretty good singer too.  You can hear his golden pipes on display during the interview below.

But it’s inside the ring where Pacquiao has made his mark.  Many people view Manny Pacquiao as unstoppable right now and after demolishing Ricky Hatton and Oscar De La Hoya, it’s hard to argue the other way.  Because of his brilliance in his last couple of fights and because he has shown that he can stand toe-to-toe with a number of different fighters in a number of different weight classes, many people view Manny Pacquiao as the best pound-for-pound fighter on the planet.  This Saturday night he has a fight against Miguel Cotto where he will be going for his record seventh world title in his seventh different weight class.  However, this is not the fight that people want to see.  I think it will certainly be a challenge for the smaller Pacquiao against the bigger and stronger Cotto, but the fight that I want to see along with the rest of the world is Manny Pacquiao against Floyd Mayweather Jr.  Then rather than just speculating who the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world is, it can finally be decided in the ring.  Many people think this fight against Cotto is just another hurdle for Pacquiao to leap over before the best two pound-for-pound fighters step between the ropes.  As a fight fan, I certainly hope that is the case.

Manny Pacquiao joined 2 Live Stews on Sporting News Radio to talk about the fight against Miguel Cotto, the troubles he faces against a bigger fighter, his hobbies outside the ring, and the potential matchup against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

On the floods that were going on in the Philippines that brought his camp to the United States

“It’s not going to bother me.  I’m really focused on this training camp.  Things are doing great in the Philippines and I’m ready to fight.  It’s all set.”

On fighting a bigger fighter like Miguel Cotto:

“Yeah, of course I know that he is bigger than me and stronger than me, but I have a strategy and techniques for that advantage.  Plus I think the speed will be the key of this fight and I believe in my power too.”

On his hobbies outside the ring that include singing:

“I love to sing too.  Aside from boxing and basketball, I love to sing and I love music.  After the fight, we have an after the fight party in Mandalay Arena and everybody will come and I’m going to sing.  I will bring my band.”

On the possibility of fighting Floyd Mayweather after his fight with Miguel Cotto:

“Probably after the fight we will be starting to talk about that fight and discuss that fight, but right now my mind is all set and focused for the fight on Saturday.  It’s still about the fight this Saturday.”
