Tim Lincecum: “I dont even know if I know the magnitude of what just happened.”
November 20, 2009 – 8:55 am by Zach Krantz
Yet, Lincecum has won the last two NL Cy Young Awards, and was the first second-year player to win the Cy Young since Dwight Gooden and Bret Saberhagen both won in 1985. Even being on a non-playoff team this year, he narrowly edged out St. Louis Cardinals pitchers Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright. He has quickly become one of the best pitchers in the game and is only 25 years old. Lincecum was the anchor for the Giants very successful rotation by going 17-5 with a 2.48 ERA in 225 1/3 innings.
Tim Lincecum joined KNBR in San Franciscotalking about winning the Cy Young award, his future with the Giants and adding more pitches to his repertoire.
Asked if he realizes the he was the first player to win the Cy Young back to back in their first two complete seasons:
“Its still kind of sinking in, you know the award is a big deal obviously. You said I was the first to win it two years in a row for my first two seasons, I don’t even know if i know the magnitude of what just happened.”
Asked how he thinks he compares to Wainwright and Carpenter and why he had the edge:
“ I think the strikeouts helped me, the fact that I was able to make an improvement on last year with the numbers, the WHIP, the ERA, those kid of things.”
Asked about adding the changeup to his pitches and now it’s his go-to pitch:
“Its just one of those things, I kept using it and last year was big for me because I was able to use it. I was able to gain confidence in it. It kind of carried me into this year.”
Asked about his future in San Francisco, if the team and his agent have begun talks about a new contract:
“I don’t know, I am beginning to get a little more familiar with this, just because I am going through it and hearing about it, talking to my agent a little bit. Nothing has been concrete, nothing has been set in stone. I am just playing the waiting game, trying to enjoy the off-season and getting ready for the next year. As far as offers and things like that involving a long term contract, I am definatley open to whatever. I just have to hear whats going on first.”
