David Beckham On MLS, The 2010 World Cup, And His Wife’s Love Of Sex

November 23, 2009 – 6:10 am by Michael Bean

The 2009 Major League Soccer season has come to an end. On Sunday night, Real Salt Lake defeated the Los Angeles Galaxy on penalty kicks to claim the 2009 MLS Cup on a neutral field in Seattle. International sensation David Beckham is a part of that Galaxy team, of course, and though he may not even be second or third fiddle on the squad, he’s definitely still got the most star power of any soccer player currently on American soil – Galaxy teammate and 2009 MLS MVP Landon Donovan included.

Beckham joined The Dan Patrick Show on Friday to talk about how his injured foot was doing heading in to the game, what winning an MLS championship would mean to his already very accomplished career, how he’s committed to doing everything he can to make England’s team for the 2010 World Cup, and about how his wife disrupts his sleeping schedule with her insatiable appetite for sex.

On how his injured foot is doing:

“It’s getting better each day. I didn’t train until yesterday which was really frustrating because I had a bone bruise and couldn’t actually even get a regular shoe on. So I was wearing this brace thing that was quite annoying. But I’m out of that, in to normal shoes, and hopefully today will be the first day I train. But you know, it’s been a good week training for the guys. They’ve worked hard, they’re focused, and we’re in Seattle now so we’re ready.”

On how important winning this championship means to him:

“I think it’s important. People have put so much importance on it just because there’s people that have questioned whether it’s been a success, me being here. But for me personally, I always love to be successful, I always love to win trophies, and that’s no different. The reason that I want to win this game is because I want the Galaxy to be successful. And it quiets a few people along the way, and it as already, which is always nice. So we’re enjoying that part of it.”

On his teammate Landon Donovan winning the MVP of the MLS this year:

“Oh, I think it’s great. On our Galaxy team we have the Rookie of the Year with Omar, and we’ve got the MVP obviously with Landon. Landon’s been great this year, he’s scored goals, he’s worked hard for the team. And as captain, he’s been exceptional. So he deserves the MVP and it’s great. I hope he scores a few more on Sunday.”

On if he’ll be playing in the 2010 World Cup for the English National Team:

“I hope so. It’s one of the reasons I’m leaving my family for 6 months to go play in Milan. You know, it’s not something I’m looking forward to because at the end of the day, everyone knows how I feel about my family. And to leave them for 6 months to go and play is going to be tough. But I’m doing it for a reason; I’m doing it so that one day, my sons will turn around and say ‘my daddy played in four World Cups.’ And if I can achieve that – you know, me going to Milan still doesn’t guarantee my place on the squad. So, I just need to do everything possible to try and get on that squad. And if I do, it will be amazing.”

Victoria Beckham recently said that she’d rather have sex than sleep – DP asked Beckham if she was quoted correctly:

“Without a doubt. Of course, and I must admit, it definitely sounds like one of my wife’s quotes. She loves saying things like that. You know, she said a few things in the past we really laugh about. About me, wearing her underwear or she’s called me Golden Balls on national T.V. So, it definitely sounds like one of my wife’s quotes.”

On whether or not he was going to get any sleep before the big game on Sunday because Beckham was up in Seattle without his family:

“Well, she does arrive on Sunday morning, so you never know.”

And then finally on whether sleeping with Victoria was an injury hazard:

“I don’t know. I think everybody’s different. Everybody’s different. But no, I won’t see the family before the game because I’ll be focusing on the game. But I’ll see the boys and Victoria right after.
