Jimmie Johnson: “Life is good. I cant believe what we have accomplished in racing to be able to win four in a row is unbelievable.”
November 24, 2009 – 8:30 am by timgunterJimmie Johnson just accomplished what no one is NASCAR has ever done in history. He has won four consecutive points championships in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup and in doing so he has established himself as the most dominant driver this decade. On Sunday, Johnson became just the fourth driver in history to win four or more championships, Earnhardt, Petty and Gordon being the other three drivers. Johnson, Mark Martin and Jeff Gordon are all teammates and finished one, two, three, and they became the first team in history to do so. So where does Johnson rank among the all-time best? Personally, I think he would be right behind Richard Petty and Dale Earnhradt as the best NASCAR drivers ever.

Jimmie Johnson joined Mike and Mike on ESPN Radio to talk about how he is feeling after the win on Sunday, his victory and how much was relief and how much was joy, Whether he understands the importance of what he has accomplished, and what the future looks like for him.
On how he is feeling after the win on Sunday:
“Life is good. I can’t believe what we have accomplished in racing to be able to win four in a row is unbelievable.”
On his victory and how much was relief and how much was joy:
“You know there was a big part of relief there is no doubt about that. Three weeks ago we ran into some trouble in the Texas race and to bounce back from that and rebound with a win in Phoenix, to come back in the race last night and to really deliver and make it happen. There are so many emotions that go along with it and to respond, deliver, step up as a race team and to make things happen there is so many emotions that go with it. I am just lost for words. It has been a crazy couple of nights. There are so many things that go along with it. The team atmosphere… The entire team put so much into this thing and for us all to pull together last night and make it happen means the world to me.”
Whether he understands the importance of what he has accomplished:
“I don’t think I will for a little bit. I have really blocked out the last few weeks and all the media stuff that has gone into it. I really wanted to stay in my own place and just understand kind of the basics of what was going on. So I blocked out the media and I cant wait until I go home and once the next day or two goes by and look back on what we have done with this race team and go through all of the clippings, TV broadcasts, radio stuff, just everything and really absorb what we have done as a race team.”
On what the future looks like for him:
“I really hope to do more of the same but I am truly humbled by what we have accomplished and respect our sport and love it dearly. I had no idea that things would turn out like they have and I certainly hope for more of the same but at the same time this is just what I am entitled to receive. I will take it and roll with it but it has been a wild ride. I am so honored to represent our sport and be a part of something so special. If can do it again next year or whenever that next opportunity comes I will so appreciate it. This is the ultimate time of my life. I just cant tell you how much this means to me.”
On his teammates feeling good as well:
“I do and we have a great organization and everybody is committed to doing the best job that they can and to get the top three positions in points it shows a lot for what this company is made of. Next year is a new year and fortunately once you are off into Daytona in a few months and everything starts over again. The entire 550 people at Hendrick Motorsports have done their best job and to capture the top three spots is pretty cool.”
