Colt McCoy Has All But Sealed Up the Heisman Trophy
November 30, 2009 – 10:30 am by timgunterColt McCoy had one of the best games of his life this past week against Texas A&M. McCoy all but sealed up his Heisman trophy with a career game against the Longhorns rival, Texas A&M. Last year’s Heisman runner-up threw for 304 yards for 4 touchdowns and rushed for a career-high 175 yards. That victory put Texas at 12-0 and made McCoy the first Texas starting quarterback in history to have back-to-back twelve win seasons. In my opinion, the Heisman race should be between McCoy and Toby Gerhart. Stanford running back, Toby Gerhart, should be the front-runner after his performance against Notre Dame this past Saturday night. Gerhart ran for 205 yards, 3 touchdowns and even threw for a touchdown as the Cardinals upset the Fighting Irish. After all, Gerhart leads the nation in rushing touchdowns with 26. It is highly unlikely that Gerhart will wind up winning the Heisman trophy but he should. The Heisman trophy is now awarded to the best player on one of the best teams not the best player in college football like it was in the past. If Texas beats Nebraska in the Big Twelve Championship this weekend McCoy will punch his ticket to New York and win the Heisman.

Colt McCoy joined the Dan Patrick Show (with guest hosts Sean Farnham and Jerry Ferrara (Turtle from Entourage) to talk about whether the Heisman Trophy race ever enters his mind going into a big game late into the season, the importance of playing in a National Championship game, playing Texas A&M in a rivalry game and when a rivalry game becomes just another game.
Whether the Heisman Trophy race ever enters his mind going into a big game late into the season:
“Oh yeah my teammates talk about it all the time. They want it really bad. For me, I just want to win. I want to do what I can to help our team win and give them the best opportunity to win. I am not worried about it. Obviously it would be a tremendous honor, tremendous award. That is something that I think every college football player dreams about, but we have got a lot at stake for us now. My main concern now is just winning.”
On the importance of playing in a National Championship game:
“It would mean a lot. That is something that you dream about as a kid growing up. Now we have the opportunity right in front us and we want to take full advantage of it. It starts next week. We got our hands full with Nebraska. We really have to prepare and be focused from them then our goals will come true.”
On playing Texas A&M in a rivalry game and when a rivalry game becomes just another game:
“Yeah no doubt. It doesn’t matter if we are both out there 0-10 it is going to be a hard fought game. We fully expected that going in. We felt like we had some good opportunities against their defense to score some points and we were able to do that. In a rivalry game like that and going on the road into their place… They don’t like us at all. We knew it was going to be tough. We knew it was going to a hard fought win.”
On him having a better career game than Vince Young:
“That is crazy. Vince is the best quarterback I’ve seen ever play in person. He taught me so much. I was able my redshirt year to just really watch film with him, go to practice with him, see the way that he led his teammates. It was really a blessing for me to have played behind him for a year. To be able to have my name mentioned in the same sentence with him is a real honor.”
