Gary Kubiak: “I am trying to do the best job I can every week”

December 1, 2009 – 9:35 am by Zach Krantz

It was a collapse that may end up being the “one” that gets a head coach fired. This collapse is how the Houston Texans and Head Coach Gary Kubiak lost a 17-point lead to the Indianapolis Colts this past Sunday. This could have been a statement game for the Texans, beating one of the two undefeated teams left and at one point beating them bad. They had Peyton Manning in check and that high-powered Colt offense looking for anything. The Colts were down 17-0 to the Texans and all looked well for them.

Let us go now to the end of the first half where the score was 20-7 in favor of the Texans. Now comes the fairy tale ending for the Colts and the nightmare for Kubiak and the Texans. Matt Schaub started the game red hot going 14-17 for 152 yards and a touchdown; in the second half he turned the ball over 3 times (Two INT’s and one fumble) and the Texans spiraled out of control. Peyton Manning was intercepted twice in the first half and threw two touchdowns in the second. This game could have been called “A Tale of Two Halves”.  Kubiak will take the heat big time for this loss and is as we speak.  Kubiak has been average at best for the Texans is his time there, in 2006 6-10, in 2007 and 2008 he was 8-8 and this year he is 5-6. So maybe one game doesn’t make a difference, but this collapse by the Texans could be the one that gets Kubiak fired for being just average.

Gary Kubiak joined KILT in Houston and talked about the loss to the Colts on Sunday, the play of his team in the last few games, and the chance that his job is on the line these last few weeks of the season.

Asked if this was the most disheartening loss of the six for the season:

“I think any time you get beat its disappointing, they all carry the same weight. Obviously, the way it happened yesterday it is confusing I guess to me. We played probably as good as a half of football as we played in a long, long time. Then come back and in some areas probably played as bad of a half of football as we played. You’re not going to get away against a great football team with a great leader like they have.”

Asked if felt in any way that the last five games he is coaching for his job:

“I am trying to do the best job I can every week. That is part of this business, there is always going to be talk of that when you are not getting things done on a consistent basis and obviously, this team hasn’t been consistent. We have struggled these last three weeks, so that is part of my responsibility. I got a lot of belief in myself and I got a lot of belief in the guys that I send on the field each week and this coaching staff, so you keep swinging. As far as the scrutiny that goes with this job, you know that when you sign up.”

Asked if he thought it was fair that people are broaching this topic:

“Is it fair? Yeah I guess it’s fair. That’s the business that we are in, but I don’t get too caught up in it. I have a job to do, I have to stay focused on what I am doing. The thing that matters to me and anything I do in life is that I am able to say I have given it my best shot and I guarantee you one thing, you are going to get my best shot.”
