Kevin Sullivan: “When he comes back he will be received with open arms and their will be an outpouring of support for him.”
December 3, 2009 – 10:30 am by Zach KrantzAs you can just imagine the word on the street and the talk amongst all water coolers the last few days has been about Tiger Woods and what’s going on in his life right now. The never flawed image, the perfect quiet all world golfers’ image has been tarnished and tarnished forever. So whether you know all the facts and details or not, everyone has an opinion on it. Everyone has their take on why Tiger didn’t come out first and say what was really going on. There have been issues like this in the past with high profile people like Bill Clinton, Kobe Bryant and even a case like Mike Vick’s.
One thing we all know is that the country is very forgiving, as long as you tell the truth. Seriously, you can kill dogs, sleep with 50 women, get caught with your pants down, anything and all you have to do is say you are sorry and it will all be ok. The more time you waste and try to make it look like you are hiding something, the harder it is to make everyone feel sorry for you and accept your apology. Even if your image is flawless, like Tiger’s, making a mistake or mistakes is human nature, but if you lie afterwards, shame shame shame!
Former White House Press Secretary Kevin Sullivan joined 106.7 the Fan in DC to talk about how Tiger Woods should have handled this situation with the media.
Asked why Tiger didn’t come out in front of a camera and talk to the world and seem genuine:
“I think the Kobe thing with his wife was excellent, of course his wife didn’t speak and he didn’t go into any detail and I think the big difference is that the tabloid and regular media wants details. He has no obligation to do that; he should protect the privacy of his marriage and of his family. Its tough to go on Oprah and not talk about the details, how many times, how long, who with, how many were their? He is just not going to do that. I think the question is will there be a point where she says something or appears with him to show that support as you so often see the spouse do. When Elliot Spitzer went through his thing, one of the big stories was that his wife did not show up. Elin has not been a public figure; you don’t see her get interviewed. My bet would be your not going to see that, he won’t address it again. I also bet that when he comes back he will be received with open arms and their will be an outpouring of support for him.”
Asked if this will be a distraction when he comes back because he is so close to the fans when he competes:
“This is one of the most mentally tough guys that has ever competed. The notion that he is going to lose focus or he is going to be distracted, I don’t buy it. The one thing I noted in his statement, he expressed surprise in the level of the tabloid media, and I don’t buy that. He has been in the intense spotlight for 13-14 years now. I don’t think it will affect him, I really don’t. Fans can yell at Kobe from the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, row, you are right it is different walking by yourself , no locker room to go into, you are out there and people can yell things, I just don’t think you are going to see it that much.”
