The Indianapolis Colts Can’t Lose If They Tried

Just when you think the Indianapolis Colts are going to finally lose a game this season, they somehow end up winning. For example, this past Sunday Peyton Manning threw three interceptions and they still won the game. That was the first time in Manning’s career that he threw three interceptions and the Colts still won the game. With that win, the Colts have secured the AFC’s number one seed and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Since they have secured their spot in the playoffs will the Colts rest their starters this Thursday against the Jaguars? First year head coach, Jim Caldwell, stated yesterday that, “We’re going to prepare just like we did for the first 13, and we’re going to play just like we did the first 13. The only thing that would deter anyone from playing is a health issue.” I don’t blame him for wanting to play his starters. The decision might be intended to prevent the rustiness and lack of momentum that has plagued the Colts for some years as they enter the playoffs. If all goes well, it looks as if it will be a Saints vs. Colts Super Bowl but I would rather see the Vikings vs. Colts. That would be epic with Brett Favre taking on Peyton Manning for Super Bowl XLIV.

Gary Brackett joined 1070 The Fan in Indianapolis with Kravitz and Eddie to talk about the Broncos talking some trash Sunday and the team seems to play better when that happens, what the key is to the Colts third-down defense, what keys he looks for to shoot in between a gap, and whether he and the defense have another slogan.

On the Broncos talking some trash Sunday and the team seems to play better when that happens:

“That is exactly right and you know Brandon Marshall is definitely a fiery guy. So coming out of the game he really was talking quite a bit. Darrell Reid, the guy that was very familiar with us, he was popping off at the mouth the whole week about what they ere going to do to us. You definitely get a little bit fiery out there. It is a pride thing. You definitely don’t want any one coming in especially on your turf talking anything that doesn’t belong out there.”

On Brandon Marshall being able to say something during his 21-catch performance:

“Yeah maybe. I didn’t realize that he had 21 catches but you got to tip your hat off to them. They definitely do a great job of putting them into different situations and different positions, getting him the ball. He did a great job of catching.”

On what Jim Caldwell has said about how he plans to use the starters the rest of the regular season:

“We haven’t really discussed obviously how we are going to use the starters. I think the guys that are healthy we plan on playing. Obviously when you got some guys that are banged up or injured a little bit that kind of got it out the last couple of weeks those are the guys that might get a little bit of rest just to heal their wounds. But I am one of those guys that are healthy so I am anxious to get there out to Jacksonville and play sixty minutes.”

On what the key is to the Colts third-down defense:

“I think it is our interior lineman. I think they are doing a great job of penetrating, playing in the other teams backfield and gave me and the guys a chance a free run at the running back and when you have that you definitely want to try to get him down.”

Whether he and the defense have another slogan:

“This year we call ourselves the D Block… That is the tag name for the ’09 campaign.”
