Jerricho Cotchery and the Jets Just Need to Win to Get Into the Dance.
December 29, 2009 – 11:32 am by Zach Krantz
A few weeks back when the Jets lost to the Atlanta Falcons Rex Ryan came out in his post game presser and said now they are out of the playoffs. Boy was he wrong. The Jets just did something last Sunday that no other team in the NFL could do this season, beat the Colts. I know, Manning and the rest of the starters sat after they got the 15-10 lead. But who cares, a win is a win is a win! Now the Jets hold their destiny card, if they can come out this Sunday Night against the Bengals and win, they are in the playoffs. Rex you should look at your notes before you come out and talk, or maybe that was reverse physiology to his locker room? No I don’t think Rexy is that smart, but regardless the Jets are right where they want to be.
One of the reason they are where they are right now is the running game and the conservative passing offense for rookie QB Mark Sanchez. They ran for over 200 yards and Sanchez threw no interceptions. The passing game has been very sporadic, Sanchez has had games where he looks good and some where he looked horrible. As long as the defense can hold their own and the running game stays solid, the Jets could be in position to make an improbable run into the playoffs. They are in this position because they needed a whole bunch of teams to lose last week and they did. Now a win versus the Bengals (who might be resting a bunch of guys as well this week, lucky Jets) and they will get the invite to the big dance.
Jerricho Cotchery joined Ed Coleman on WFAN in New York and talked about the win against the Colts, their shot to get into the playoffs, the play of Mark Sanchez, and the comparison between the Jets and Bengals.
Asked how he feels now after all the chips fell into place and a win and they are in the playoffs:
“ We can’t ask for a better situation then to put it all on ourselves and hope for some other teams to lose, we are happy that we have a chance to go out here and win the game on Sunday to have a chance to get into the playoffs.”
Asked about the win against the Colts despite their starters being pulled late:
“We viewed it as a win. At the end of the day you still have to go out there, play and make plays to win the game. You play against a lot of good players in this league and it doesn’t matter if you are a starter or a backup. If the starter goes down you have to come in and step up and it shouldn’t be a dropoff. We were very pleased with the win on Sunday and we are looking forward to this game this coming Sunday.”
Asked to give a scouting report on Mark Sanchez in the last few weeks:
“I think he has been managing the game very well, obviously he made a couple of mistakes in the Atlanta game along with everyone else on the team. I think he has done a great job. Last week he did a great hob like always with his preparation for the Colts game and it allowed him to go out there and have a very good game and helped us get the win. I know he is excited about having a chance to get to the playoffs as a rookie and I am excited for him.”
Asked about the similarities between the Bengals and the Jets:
“This is a very tough bunch. Last year they had a lot of injuries and that kind of hurt them in the quest for a good season. One thing I do know is when they came up here last year that defense was outstanding. Their defense carried a lot and gave them a chance to win a lot of games last year despite all of the injuries that they had. The defense has carried over to this year, those guys play extremely hard, and they make a lot of plays. Historically Marvin Lewis’ defenses always have produced a lot of turnovers; those guys do a great job. We know we defiantly have our work cut out for us.”
