Jay Is Feely Alright After Sunday’s Game

January 12, 2010 – 10:00 am by timgunter

The New York Jets kicker, Jay Feely, was a huge part of the win on Sunday against the Bengals. In addition to kicking field goals on Sunday, he had to handle the punting duties as well when Steve Weatherford developed dizziness and an elevated heart rate during pre-game warm-ups. Feely, punting for the first time ever in his NFL career, averaged thirty-one yards on seven punts and managed to pin the Bengals inside the twenty-yard line three times. Feely said that going out for his first punt was the most nervous that he has ever been in his life. The good thing for Feely is that he didn’t do anything to screw up his team’s chances to win the game. So now they will face the San Diego Chargers this weekend and have to travel across country to do so. I think this is where the Jets will meet their demise as the Chargers have won eleven games in a row heading into Sunday’s game. The match-up to watch is going to be Darrelle Revis against Vincent Jackson. If Vincent Jackson is able to use his big body to go up and catch balls, it is going to be a long day for the Jets. I expect the Chargers to win by ten points.

Jay Feely joined ESPN New York to talk about whether there were any nerve-racking moments for him out there in Sunday’s game, what he thought about when the team got a turnover early in the game on a fumble, Braylon Edwards dropping touchdown passes every week, and whether Shonn Greene has jumped past Thomas Jones on the depth chart.

Whether there were any nerve-racking moments for him out there in Sunday’s game:

“Yeah I am going to be honest with you., that is the most nervous that I have ever been when I went out there on that first punt. The thing that is going through your mind is that I do not want to let my team down. I don’t want to mess up here and do something that is going to cause us to lose. So you want to catch the ball first and get it off second and not get it blocked. Those are my biggest concerns and you try and get the best punt that you can. I was definitely our of my comfort zone. In fact I would have been more comfortable returning punts than punting.”

What he thought about when the team got a turnover early in the game on a fumble:

“It was tremendous because the last thing that you want to do is give them momentum. We felt like the one thing moving forward from the week 17 game was the physical way and nature that we beat them up and to give them hope right off of the bat and let them get a big return obviously wasn’t the way that we wanted to start. For our defense to step up and not even give up a field goal, to put the clamps on them and send them another message that it wasn’t going to be any different from last week.”

On Braylon Edwards dropping touchdown passes every week:

“No. You know what? Everybody is going to make a play that they wish they could get back and he is going to be right there for us. We are going to need him this week and I have got all of the confidence. We see him every day go up against Revis and compete everyday and get better everyday. I think that there is going to be a moment where he comes up huge for us.”

Whether Shonn Greene has jumped past Thomas Jones on the depth chart:

“No I don’t think so. I think it is match–up based. I think it is a coach doing a great job at recognizing who is hot. The great thing is that we have a lot of adversity and we pound you and keep guys fresh. That Thomas can be in there and then you can bring Shonn Greene in there and visa versa. I just think, and you look at Thomas and he had 1,000 yards this year and he is one of three backs in the NFL who have had five consecutive one thousand yard seasons: Him, Steven Jackson and LaDainian Tomlinson. I don’t think that he gets enough credit for how good he has been. He has only missed like three games in the last seven years at the running back position. Don’t discredit him, just give Shonn a lot of credit for having such a great game and you get two rookies that step up, in Sanchez and Shonn Greene, and play phenomenal. That is huge for this team to have tow guys with no experience in the playoffs and who are rookies in the NFL play that well.”

On the play of Dustin Keller:

“He is a talented playmaker. He is a guy that has got great hands and has got really good speed. He has matured and got a lot better at blocking and becoming an all-around tight end. I just think that it is predicated on what the game plan dictates. I think Schotty deserves so much credit because they did such a great job at coming up with a way to take advantage of how well we ran the ball the week before and we used play-action to get Sanchez rolling out of the pocket and to find that second-tier receiver and a lot of times that was Dustin Keller. Hopefully we can dial up those same kinds of effective plays this weekend.”
