Freddie Roach Thinks Floyd Mayweather is Ducking Manny Pacquiao

January 15, 2010 – 10:15 am by Chris Fedor

The date that every fight fan had circled on their calendar was March 13th. That’s when Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao were supposed to fight in one of the most anticipated fights in recent memory. It would’ve been a chance for the fight world to finally see who is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. Well, the debate will have to go on for at least two more months or until the two finally step between the ropes. So now instead of getting to see Mayweather-Pacquiao on March 13th fight fans have to settle for Joshua Clottey against Manny Pacquiao. No offense to Clottey. He has an impressiveresume and an impressive record of 35-3. But I have no interest in seeing Pac fight Joshua Clottey. Especially not on the same date that I was supposed to get to see Pacquiao fight Mayweather.

No fight fan really wants to see that fight. Everyone wants to see Mayweather-Pacquiao. They don’t like each other, there have been verbal jabs thrown back and forth between the two camps and because Manny Pacquiao did not want to take a blood test that was not required by anybody except Floyd Mayweather and his father, the fight is off for the moment. This is not good for the sport of boxing. This fight would’ve been huge. In a day and age where MMA is growing more and more and has stepped ahead of boxing in terms of popularity, this would’veput boxing right there with MMA again or even put it over the top.

Freddie Roach joined 790 the Zone in Atlanta to talk about the Mayweather fight being cancelled, how good Floyd Mayweather is as a fighter, how much this fight not happening will hurt the sport of boxing, and whether or not he thinks the fight against Mayweather will ever happen.

On whether or not he is disappointed that the Mayweather is not going to happen:

“Me and Manny are both disappointed.  We wanted this fight badly.  I’’ve been studying tapes for the last month of Mayweather trying to come up with the perfect game plan.  Just everything fell apart, but the thing is we’re not going to sit around and wait for Mayweather.  He doesn’t make the rules.  We’re gonna move on and fight Joshua Clottey.  A very tough fight, a very good action fight, but not the Mayweather fight, the fight that everyone wants to see.”

On how good Mayweather is:

“He’s great at what he does.  He’s really, really a hard puzzle to defeat.  He doesn’t have too many flaws, he makes very few mistakes.  He’s not perfect, but he’s a very good fighter.  He’s very technical and his counterpunching style is very effective for him.”

On why Manny Pacquiao wasn’t willing to give blood close to the fight:

“Everyone acts differently when giving blood.  Some people pass out, some people need to eat something, and some people feel weak for a little while.  Manny, I lose him for three days. He doesn’t feel well for about three days.  Blood doesn’t bother me at all but again it’s the individual.  The thing is they can’t guarantee me that they won’t take blood the day before the fight than I say ‘well we can’t go with your deal.’  Then I decided that Mayweather doesn’t make the rules up.  We go by the Nevada Commission rules and the sanction and body rules only.  We don’t work for Mayweather and we’re not going to do a blood test because that’s not required in the bylaws of the Nevada Athletic Commission.   The thing is, I did talk to some people about saliva and urine tests, they’re more complete than blood.  The only thing blood is good for is comparing year to year.  This is a one fight deal.  There is no comparison with Olympic athletes when you have long-term testing.  If they wanna fight, they’ll show up.  If not, we’ll just move on, we’ll keep moving.  We’ve got Shane Mosley and (Andre) Berto coming up and I think we’ll fight the winner of that next.”

On whether or not this was Mayweather’s back door out:

“It definitely was his back door out.  He’s afraid to get that loss on his record.  He’s very proud of his undefeated record.  And I think he had second thoughts about this one.”

On how bad he wants the fight against Mayweather:

“Really, really bad.  I don’t even care about the money.  There’s a lot of money involved in course, I’d do this one for free.  I just want to show who the best fighter in the world is today and I know it’s my guy Pacquiao.  Mayweather struggled with Oscar (De La Hoya) and he struggled with (Ricky) Hatton for a little while and Manny destroyed both of these guys.  I know he can get in there with the right game plan and he can destroy this guy too.”

On how bad boxing needs this fight:

“Boxing really needs this fight.  These two guys not fighting is gonna hurt our game.  I think it was just gonna put us over the top of MMA again.  Boxing really needs this fight.  That’s why I hope after this next fight maybe the fight will be even bigger I guess.   The thing is I think it has to happen and me and Manny definitely want it to happen.”

On whether or not he thinks the Mayweather fight will ever happen:

“Yeah.  And I think in the near future.  Once Floyd realizes that he can’t make the money that he needs to make with anyone else in the world, he’s gonna have to fight us.  I think this fight is definitely gonna happen and this controversy maybe will build it up but by that time he will be fighting Congressman Manny Pacquiao.”

  2. the gayweathers knew pacman’s kryptonite months before they challenged him… & that is blood drawn close to the fight, just like what happened in his first bout with morales.

watch the video on you tube, pacquiao interview by dong puno after the morales fight 2005

this is the sole reason why pac wants a cut off date for blood testing that will not throw him out of his rhythm come fight night.

and besides he agreed to be blood tested right after the fight in his locker room… if he’s on roids it will show just the same.
so why the talks that he’s guilty of using roids or afraid of needles? whose stupid theories are those?

  3. Floyd is a proven drug user – Xylocaine a drug to remove pain in (broken) fist and the punches received of course! the guy had the audacity to accuse Manny of drug use but he is quilty as HELL! oh, yes he also cheated Juan Manuel Marquez by coming overweight over agreed weight limit, geniune cheater, what a bummer!

  4. its very clear since day one mayweather is not looking for a dope or riods. he looking for something that weakens pac, since asda is a good friend of GBP they take the advantage since pac is willing now to take the test and eager to kill him for that then they dissapear.i love to see fmm fight pac becoz he will be forever remembered as the “greatest chicken fighter on the planet” and that can still be a legagy.

  6. Everything that has been said, is written, broken & analysed. For those who bothered to see both sides of the coin, it is obvious who is spinning his yarn.

Americans have got to stand up for the right & you really can’t allow Floyd and his gang to get away with what they’re doing.

Ultimately it reflects on the morals & ethics of the present society that would allow a person like Floyd to be a role model & an ‘american hero’in his own mind. Really … my concern are for those that are so gullible to believe that he is.

By Chris on Jan 15, 2010

  7. Truth is Floyd was SCARED to DEATH by just even hearing Mannys name. He just din’t realize that losing this opportunity isn’t worth as losing his ZERO. If he miss this fight then he’ll be forever SECOND and he knows that very well that SECOND SUCKS. If he’ll realize by fighting Manny later..then it be again Floyds disadvantage..because he’ll get older before Manny does.

  8. I’m a Pacquiao Fan so it doesn’t matter who he fight with will support 101% and will pay for that pay per view… If you havent see pacquiao fight your missing the best action pack there is… Too bad that mayweather is not fighting pacquiao… Mayweather is ducking and quacking… Quack quack quack

By Boxing Fan 2000 on Jan 15, 2010

  9. i am just confused concern to mayweather using pain reliever to his broken fist during the fight, is that not make him advantage? tru this he will never feel the hurt from the beat received to any power punch if using his fist as a shield? Xylocaine is not consider as a drug? just asking.

By nobody on Jan 15, 2010

  10. The purpose of blood testing is whether pacman is on drugs or not. Blood testing right after the fight, which pacman agreed, would still catches him if he is indeed on drugs, yet floyd refused. Obviously, Floyd wanted to have a big advantage during fight night, and now that pacman refused his whims, Floyd ducked him. He is chicken actually, a coward not worthy to be an American.

By hezzaq on Jan 15, 2010

  11. Mr. Writer, please be fair in using a word or a phrase. Your statement is misleading when you wrote “…because Manny Pacquiao did not want to take a blood test…” For those who refused to understand, Pacman never said “NO” to the blood test. He was only asking that it should not be done too close to the fight date; and even made it very clear to have his blood drawn right after the fight.

  12. “No fight fan really wants to see that fight[Pacquiao - Clottey].” Wait a second… I’m a fight fan and I really want to see that fight. You certainly don’t speak for all fans.

By Steve on Jan 15, 2010

  13. it is very clear also that gayweather is afraid of manny pacquiao for the main reason that he knows pacquiao will be the first person who can jeopardize his record, no doubt about that! he looks for an alibi in order to keep him away from the megafight. poor weather. go home floyd and raise livestock chicken!

  16. In response to Juan, its a fair point that Manny thinks the blood tests before Morales one contributed, however Manny and outsiders put a lot of blame away from Manny when talking about how Manny lost that fight (blood, gloves, outside promotion problems etc.). How bout he just got beaten by the better fighter on the night?

In relation to Money/Manny, both parties are at fault, Money shouldn’t be making the rules and Manny should have taken 14 days.

But still, Money has been ducking since Kostya Tszyu was fighting….

  17. Mayweather just looked great in his fights because he only fought no-good opponents.

By twinkletoe on Jan 15, 2010

  18. Pacman vs. Clottey may even steal the show guys! If your were able to watch the Cotto-Clottey fight, then you will definitely agree with me that this will be a more entertaining fight. Admittedly, Mayweather is the bigger man in terms of popularity but when it comes to action, Mayweather doesn’t even compare to Clottey! I am going to enjoy this fight I’m sure!

  19. Whether you use “PSYCHOLOGICAL COWARD” or “CONGENITAL COWARD”, it makes no difference if applied to Mayweather. The root word is still COWARD. And it refers to Floyd Mayweather.

    By tony1946 on Jan 15, 2010

  20. @Bruha, Every Boxing Fan knows that FRAUD JR is the GREATEST DUCKING COWARD OF ALL TIME> He ducked Margaritto for $12Mill, He ducked Paul WIlliams, He ducked ODLH for a rematch if you recall that fight was a SPLIT decision, He ducked Cotto and in September he ducked Mosely and in December he ducked Pacquiao. Mayweather holds on to his Undefeated Record the way GOLLUM hung on to THE RING as he fell to his Death into a river Of Molten Lava..with a smile on his face…because he maintained control of the one thing in the world that mattered to him more than anything else, the ring (undefeated record)

By Huna on Jan 15, 2010

  21. Floyd Mayweather doesnt want to fight Manny Pacquiao because he is thinking he might be hit a lot & could not absorb the punches coming from Manny Pacquiao & as what he saw to the previous fight of Pacquiao & Cotto. Cotto felt hard time to avoid the combination punches thrown by Pacquiao to the face of Cotto it resulted to 2 knocked downs & the final was the halt of the referee C. Bayles just to avoid more punishment, the fact that Cotto was the bigger fighter. Thats why Floyd thinks the same that he might not last in 12 rounds. Mayweather requested the blood random doping test to gain advantage but the Pacquiao camp only wants 24 days window against to Floyd 14 days and that Mayweather refuses the offer which resulted into no deal has been made. Its the biggest embarassment to boxing. Mayweather known as the most coward fighter in the world ever exist.

  24. If Kentucky Floyd Chicken Keeps on choosing the fight that he wants, aside from his boring boxing style all of his fight in the future will look like an Amateur match. Fight the best Floyd so we can see some excitement on your fights. If you choose a great boxer except pac we know that you are scared of Pacquiao you’ve proven us already you withdraw the fight, but there are also a best boxer out there at your weight that can bring excitement to all boxing fans and stop choosing smaller opponents. If you keep it that way and still choosing smaller opponents then it’s better for you to get back from retirement your just giving a sport of boxing a big trouble and a bad image of sports.

  25. why are you telling us that he doesn’t want to be tested? blood drawn after the fight… what’s wrong with that? is that really hard to understand Chris Fedor? are you dumb or what? stupid moron maybe…

  26. I don’t want to even comment anymore. I think all of my fellow Manny Pacquiao fans nailed it. LOL!

By FranktheRiceEater on Jan 15, 2010

  27. No wonder why Floyd could not agree blood tests right after the fight. Maybe.. just maybe… an illegal substance in the pain relievers he uses just before the fight could be discovered. Could be worse than Margarito’s illegal straps.

By gii on Jan 15, 2010

  28. I don’t think it was Mayweather Jr’s wish to duck Pacquiao although it is crystal clear Floyd is afraid of the Pacman…He has let himself known, that is MONEY is his primary consideration and so this Pacquiao fight it is…

I think it is the negotiators (GBP) that makes the mistakes plus of course Floyd’s desire to gain a leverage over the Pacman knowing Blood test according to their rules will have side effects on Manny…

The sad thing about Floyd is his continuation of avoiding legitimate opponents…while Pacquiao is proving himself once again by facing Clottey,…Floyd;s is rumored to be considering Mat Hatton, or Malignaggi, or Nate Campbell… intead of considering Mosley, Williams, or Cotto…

By Dave McGee on Jan 15, 2010

  29. Chris Fedor, if you are not watching Pacquiao-Clottey at least it will be bettter than the Floyd-Marquez fight which you are watching last year. Chris you know that Floyd is just fighting a duckling (Marquez) but why you still view that event in PPV

By John Carter on Jan 15, 2010

  30. Mayweather’s defense first approach to fighting is probably necessary because he can’t take a very powerful punch. This idea alone is a great reason to believe that he would be scared of Pacquiao, who has sensational power in both hands, who can deliver a ridiculous amount of accurate punches in a short amount of time, and who has a straight left that is too fast to react to. Add to that the fact that Mayweather is known for ducking fighters who would present a problem for him, and you have every reason in the world to think Mayweather never really wanted to fight Manny Pacquiao.

  31. FLOYD IS A COWARD..THATS IT..PERIOD

By ploy maywether on Jan 15, 2010

  32. Floyd is a hypocrite to accuse Pacquiao of using PEDS while his the one taking them.
Floyd admittedly takes Xylocaine and have it injected in his hands before, so that he will feel no pain when he throws punches. Ain’t that unfair advantage against his opponents? And xylocaine is banned as a performance enhancement drug… in most states but not Nevada. So that’s the reason why he never wanted to fight Pacman somewhere else but in Vegas only.

and hit run. The real boxer use all his might
wholeheartedly and fighting like a warrior.

Real boxer doesnt think if he wins or lose but
he just figth like a dragon trying to eat the opponent.

    And that is Many Pacquio.

Manny pac its not important wheather you lose or wins. what is importtant is how you fight the quality of a great fighter. keep it up money.
