Herschel Walker is going from a Heisman Trophy to a rear naked choke
January 15, 2010 – 7:45 am by Zach KrantzHe is a competitor, he is a fierce competitor and he is taking that to the MMA world in a few weeks. He doesn’t have any experience in the octagon, but is training with a great group of people in California and is set to go. This man also is regarded as one of the best college football players of all time. He won a Heisman Trophy, starred in the USFL, the NFL, and was even a part of arguably the most uneven trade in NFL history. You ready to hear his name? Herschel Walker, that’s right Herschel Walker. The same guy who does about 2,500 sit-ups a day and about 750 push ups daily. This guy is in phenomenal shape. He eats one meal a day, no red meat, and sleeps about four hours a night. No wonder he wants to try MMA. The guy is a beast, but no spring chicken.
Walker is 47 years old and if you saw him you wouldn’t believe that. He only really started training for this MMA fight in September. If you asked him, he is fully ready to step into the Mixed Martial Arts arena for the first time on Jan. 30 to fight Greg Nagy as part of Strikeforce: Miami. I still can’t believe what I just wrote. Herschel Walker will be fighting in a few weeks against Greg Nagy in an MMA bout. Wow. He could be doing anything about now, a NFL spokesman, an ambassador at the University of Georgia, nope a MMA fighter. Talk about competitive, he is at this point half way nuts, in a good way. (Editor’s note: Well, we already know he has multiple personalities)
Herschel Walker joined the Fight Show on Hardcore Sports Radio and talked about his fight coming up in late January, the sport of MMA, and why in the world he would get into this sport at age 47.
Asked why he is trying to start a career in MMA at age 47:
“Why not? I still have the capability of doing it. I think it’s one of the finest sports out there today, it’s one of the most demanding sports and I have always considered myself a great athlete. I had a lot of things going on in my life at the time, I was building a business…whereas now I know if you have a clear mind and you are not focused on anything else and you are focused on MMA, that I can do it. This is the time I can go out there and I can perform and perform well because I want to help this sport get credibility to it. I don’t want to make it a circus and I want to let people know I am for real about it.”
Asked what he says to critics who think he could get hurt doing this:
“One thing I would say to them is first of all they have to watch it, if they come to the event in Sunrise, Fl or watch it on Showtime, I think they will be totally impressed. The reason I went to a training camp is to show it’s not a circus and not a publicity stunt, this is a real MMA fight and that I am going to step into a MMA ring and they are going to see that.”
Asked what his goals are for his MMA fighting career:
“Well I think what it is , is to take one fight at a time. I am not looking to say this is one and done. I am looking to say this is one fight and then after the fight work with my trainer Javier and go from there.”
Asked what the feedback has been from other MMA fighters around the world:
“I have had a chance to talk to some of them. They are excited about it; about what I can bring to the sport, bring some recognition to it. They are excited I even want to give it a shot, and what’s making them excited about it is that I am going spend the time in training. That this is not something that I just want to get into without training. They see that I am willing to work at it and a lot of those guys wanted to help me. Right there at AKA, we got a lot of fighters there and those fighters want to help me.”
