Michael Oher’s story is one of a kind

February 8, 2010 – 4:45 am by Zach Krantz

His story growing up and getting to the NFL was so good they made a movie, The Blind Side, about him. From a homeless kid to a first round pick in the NFL, not too shabby. Michael Oher didn’t start his life normal, but made something out of it and made it to the top of his profession. Oher proved he was that good and even after a great rookie season for the Baltimore Ravens came close to being the rookie of the year.

Oher, one of five Rookie of the Year finalists, started every game in 2009, 11 at right tackle and 5 at left tackle. In his first post-season game against the New England Patriots on  Jan. 10 he did not allow a single sack in the 33-14 win. The kid is a stud and has a bright future. This week he also made a push that Sandra Bullock who played his mother in movie about his life, “The Blindside”, should win an Oscar. Imagine that, a kid who once was homeless then was taken in by a nice Christian family, got recruited to major colleges and then becomes a first round draft pick. I mean how could this not be a movie, it sure sounds like it. The more I think about it, the more I believe my life should be a movie also, well probably not. I just have a feeling that Oher is not done writing this chapter of the next story about himself. A first round pick that became a star and a humble star at best , the best kind.

Michael Oher joined XX Sports Radio in San Diego with Darren Smith and talked about the movie the Blindside, and the expectations for him and the Ravens.

Asked about his thoughts on his rookie season:

“ I had a lot of fun. I wanted to help my team out, get to the Super Bowl but we came up short. I just want to get better this off-season and hopefully get there next year.”

Asked what its like being a teammate of Ray Lewis:

“Oh man he is amazing. His locker is right next to mine, I talk to him everyday. I just try to get everything I possibly can out of him because I have always been a big fan of his. He definitely gets us going and I told him I need him around at least 5-6 more years because I can’t do it without you. He has the body of a 20 year old, he still moves like he is in his first or second year. I can’t do it without him.”

Asked about The Blind Side and how much attention of the field he gets from that:

“A little bit, but nothing major. At the end of the day it’s a great story, it inspires a lot of people. It gives people hope and as long as it gets kids off the streets and through college it great. I think its very inspiring.

Asked if he got an advance screening of the movie or did he have to pay like the rest of us:

“I am a movie guy, I see all types of movies. I went to the movies, saw it, sat there and enjoyed it. It was a great movie.”
