Carmelo Anthony Knows that the Road to the NBA Finals Runs Through Los Angeles

February 15, 2010 – 9:10 am by Chris Fedor

Despite having to deal with a couple of different injuries this year, Carmelo Anthony is having one of the best seasons of his career. Melo is third in the NBA in scoring and is averaging the most points per game of his career. His play, along with the play of Chauncey Billups, has the Nuggets thinking about a Championship. After getting to the Western Conference Finals a season ago, some people have hesitated to put them into the same category with the Lakers, the Cavs, the Magic and even the Celtics as the “elite” teams in the league. I think they’ve earned a spot in that conversation. This team is dangerous and they are one of the few teams that could give the Lakers a legitimate run in the Western Conference. They have a tremendous starting five, they have an excellent coach, they have guys off the bench that can fill it up and they have one of the best one-two punches going with Mr. Big Shot and Melo. Not to mention, they have already beaten L.A. twice this season and in one of those games Anthony didn’t even play. The Western Conference still runs through Los Angeles, but you can be sure that the Nuggets will have something to say about the Lakers making their third straight trip to the NBA Finals.

Carmelo Anthony joined 104.3 the Fan in Denver with Mike and Scott to talk about how he feels about the team right now, whether or not it’s all about beating the Lakers this year, and the contract extension that George Karl received.

On how he feels overall about the team right now:

“We’re good man. We’re in a good spot right now; we’re in a good situation. We’re second in the West, a couple of games behind the Lakers.”

On whether or not this team has more of a confidence to them than they had a couple of years ago:

“I think before we were just going through everything and trying to figure it out as we go, game by game. I think now we know how good we are, what we can do and how successful we can be.”

On whether or not it’s all about the Lakers in the Western Conference

“Well yeah. They’re the defending champs. The Lakers are the defending champs so if we wanna get out of the West, we gotta go through them. I don’t see any reason why we wouldn’t want to go through them. If we wanna be the best, we gotta beat the best.”

On how he feels about his game right now personally:

“You tell me. I’m just trying to get healthy. So far I’m having a hell of a season. I got a long way to go. I’m in a great situation, my team is in a great place, we’re happy and we’re on our way.”

On the contract extension that George Karl received:

“First of all, to speak on the one year extension, he earned it. When you win, you get rewarded. As a result we’re working on our third straight 50 win season, we’re coming off the Conference Finals and we’re looking forward to winning a Championship. Like I said, when you win, you get rewarded.”
