Emmitt Smith: “I can say I married over my head”

February 17, 2010 – 6:45 am by Zach Krantz

There is no way Emmitt Smith wasn’t getting into the Hall of Fame this year with Jerry Rice.  Statistically the best running back of all time and the greatest wide receiver ever were no-brainers for the Hall of Fame voters. Emmitt never fully got the respect he deserved. The man is the NFL’s all time leading rusher, think about that for a second, with all the great backs that have graced the NFL. He stands alone and above them all. He won three Super Bowls, so the rings make the stats sound that much better. If you judge a player by durability he is your guy as well, in his career with Dallas he missed a total of seven games in 13 years. The man was not the fastest, biggest, or craftiest running back, but he was great. Besides the football stuff the man married way over his head, danced with the stars and was maybe the worst on air football anyalst of all time. For Emmitt, thank goodness for the NFL.

Emmitt Smith joined the Stephen A. Smith Show on Fox Sports Radio and talked about getting enshrined into the Hall of Fame, his gorgeous wife, and what the future holds for the Dallas Cowboys.

Stephen A Smith told Emmitt how good looking his wife is and gave him major props:

“Man I appreciate it. It’s funny that you said that, I had a meeting with Jerry Jones yesterday and he said he had respect for me and he always loved me about waist high. Then when I married Pat it went way above his head and my head. I told Mr. Jones you know what if I can only come to the table this much then I got to marry up so it can take me the rest of the way. So I can say I married over my head.”

Asked how great it felt to be introduced as going into the Hall of Fame a few weeks ago:

“You know Stephen A, it was a moment that was all surreal. Once they call your name and they confirm that you are selected to be enshrined in August, the things that go through your mind, the things that I was starting to think about and not only think about, but the conversation I had with my father just before that. All those things and the people that come into play in terms of helping shape your life, shape your career, give you advice and come into your life when things were not so good, all those things just came to the forefront. All I can do is reflect over the many people and say to myself “wow this is a moment not just for me, but for all of them’. I can not just take this moment and just snatch it out of the air and keep it to myself. I have to let the world know I just didn’t do this by myself and you know what god blessed me with the talent that is second to none. Put it that way. I am not being arrogant about it, I am just saying that the man has predestined me to do the things I was able to do on that football field. Not only that but even in life in terms of how I am able to affect peoples lives hopefully in an impact way. All those things just culminate at one time and you say wow, I am being appreciated for all of that. There is no way I can take this honor to myself, I have to share it with the world and there are so many people I have to share in this moment.”

Asked about the future of the Cowboys and how they struggled in the playoffs:

“I see it from a different lens and I will tell you what I see; I see a team like in 1991, the Dallas Cowboys getting to the playoffs for the first time and go to Detroit and get the living crap kicked out of them and then the next year they go on to the Super Bowl. I see this team right here this day developing the leadership that I have been thirsting for the last two and half or three years. From Tony Romo to someone on the defensive side, what I am seeing right now is a combination of both. It’s happening offensively and defensively. If these boys can take that beating from Minnesota last year and not let it destroy them internally and add a few pieces to the puzzle; they can be a very formidable opponent in the playoffs next year, go deep in the playoffs and possibly go into the Super Bowl. That’s what I believe about this team.”
