Bob Huggins Guides West Virginia Into The Dance As A #2 Seed

March 16, 2010 – 11:45 am by Michael Bean

Love him or hate him, West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins has an amazing track record of success in the game of college basketball. He’s won everywhere he’s been. Whether or not he’s done so in an entirely ‘wholesome’ fashion may be another story, but year after year his teams rake up the wins. This year was no different as the Mountaineers won 27 games and the Big East Conference Tournament. They were rewarded with a #2 seed for their stellar season and will face Morgan State in the 1st Round. Some think Huggy’s group deserved a #1 seed, but as you’ll hear he’s not too concerned about that. He just wants his team to be ready to play.

Huggins joined Tony Bruno on Into The Night to talk about his team’s draw, the selection process, what he knows about his first round opponent, and his senior sensation De’Sean Butler.

On if he thinks West Virginia deserved to be a #1 seed:

“We probably should Tony, but like I said, we’re just going to go play.”

On if he was surprised by the overall bracket:

“I was surprised. I don’t know if we were a 1 Tony. But if we weren’t a 1, we were certainly better than the third 2. But hey, it is what it is and we’re just going to go play.”

On the difficult nature of the committee’s job:

“I mean they have a hard job. It’s an extremely hard job, and it’s hard to get everything right. And I think with all the other things – not being able to put people in the same conference together and all those things – I think it’s a very difficult job and it’s hard to get right all the time. That being said, they volunteer to do it, so I guess if you volunteer to do it and you don’t do a very good job, you probably got to take the heat.”

On the Big East getting eight bids:

“We didn’t need eight to get in to know that Tony. All you have to do is play in the Big East to know how good it is.”

On his stellar senior De’Sean Butler:

“I don’t know what he is, but I know this – if they didn’t see him during the regular season they must have been living under a rock. We were on T.V. more than Homer Simpson.”
