The Los Angeles Clippers have found their head coach and his name is Vinny Del Negro. I thought Del Negro did a pretty good job in Chicago over the last couple of years and is a good choice for the Clippers. Although I really don’t know how much this really matters in the grand scheme of things. Don’t get me wrong, the Clippers have a solid roster in place and it will get even better in 2010 with former first overall pick Blake Griffin making his return from season-ending surgery in 2009. It looks like the Clippers have a future that looks bright but with an owner that doesn’t care too much about winning, it’s going to be hard for the Clippers to become relevant in the NBA once again.
Vinny Del Negro joined Fox Sports Radio with Petros and Money to talk about the expectations for the Clippers this season, what went wrong in Chicago, and Donald Sterling.
On the expectations in Los Angeles for the Clippers:
“We’ve got a lot of work to do before then. We have a young nucleus, we have got summer league starting out, we’ve got a lot of things we need to take care of, I like the young nucleus obviously with (Chris) Kaman and (Blake) Griffin up front, Eric Gordon, and Baron (Davis) and things. The draft I thought was very solid. A lot of positives and now we have to do a good job of developing these guys, playing the right way, and using some of this free agent opportunity a little bit better.”
On what went wrong in Chicago:
“There were several things. John has come out publicly and apologized for the incident and the way it was handled and things. Very competitive guys, it’s a very emotional game, we know how difficult this job is, and things happen sometimes that no one is really proud about, but you learn from it, and you move on. I’m just happy to be here in LA and have another opportunity to in a great city, great practice facility, great arena, with a young team that I feel can improve. How well they’ll improve only time will tell. We’ve got a lot of work to do but we will do it the right way and it will start tomorrow in training camp here for summer league. We have a lot of guys on the summer league roster because we’re so young.”
On Donald Sterling:
“To be honest with you, we had two very good meetings. He’s very supportive, we talked about a lot of different issues, and Mr. Sterling was tremendous. We gotta find a way to have some success and hopefully move this organization in the right direction and do the right things with a great practice facility and the advantages we have in LA.”
