Ben Roethlisberger still doesn’t know whether he’ll miss the first four or six games of the NFL season. The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback does, however, know what he’ll be doing with the few weeks off. That doesn’t mean he’s ready to tell you.
Roethlisberger has been suspended by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for off-the-field incidents, the latest a run-in at a rural bar that included a sexual assault allegation. No charges were filed but the signal-caller’s reputation clearly took a hit.
He has been fairly quiet since the incident and that doesn’t seem to be changing, but Roethlisberger said reception for him from fans has remained positive.
Ben Roethlisberger joined93.7 the Fan in Pittsburgh with Seibel and Starkey to discuss his role in camp considering his impending suspension, the reception he has received and the Steelers’ outlook this year.
On camp so far:
“I think everything’s been great. I think we’ve had a good time and I think we’ve had a good camp. It’s good to be out here and play football because that’s what it’s all about and trying to win a championship. It’s been really good in helping these young guys get better.”
On getting in shape in the offseason:
“Just working out a lot. Six days a week. I’m taking one day off and doing yoga during that day off. I just wanted to be able to come out here and be in the best shape and make sure when I do come back I’ll be in the best shape and be ready, hopefully, to not miss a beat.”
On whether he becomes somewhat of a coach during camp considering the upcoming suspension:
“As much as they want me to be. I don’t want to be that guy that oversteps and tries to do too much because I know how I’d want it. I don’t want someone in my ear all the time. So I’m available to Byron [Leftwich], Charlie [Batch] and Dennis [Dixon]. Not really Charlie as much, but Byron and Dennis, whenever they need questions I’m there to help them.”
On whether he knows what he’ll do during his weeks off during the suspension:
“I do.” Host: Can you shed a little light on it? “Not yet, but I’m sure you’ll find out soon enough.”
On how much he’s expecting to play in the preseason:
“Good question. I’m wondering the same thing. I honestly have no idea. That’s Coach’s call as it always is. I think it just depends on who he wants to see with which line. I’ll do whatever they ask me to do.”
On how fan reaction has been:
“Warm. Embracive. It’s just been awesome. It really feels good when you have a lot of people supporting you and standing behind you and telling you that. … It makes you feel good. It makes you proud to be a Steeler and have them as your fans.”
On where this Steeler team is at in terms of potential this season:
“I think we’ve got great veteran leadership but I think we’ve got the youth and the talent that can almost be, it’s hard to put into words. I don’t want to say dumb enough to not know any better, but just kind of oblivious to everything that’s going on to just kind of go out and give it their all.”
