Georges St. Pierre is considered by many to be one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the UFC right now. St. Pierre has been on a roll recently and last was seen dominating Josh Koscheck. This weekend, Georges St. Pierre will get to fight in his home country of Canada, but he is going to have his hands full with Jake Shields. Not to mention, GSP is going to have to stay focused with visions of a potential mega-fight with Anderson Silva on the horizon. Georges St. Pierre at his best I think is better than Jake Shields, but he is going to have to stay focused on Shields because if not, St. Pierre could easily lose his Welterwight Title.
Georges St. Pierre joined 790 the Zone in Atlanta with Pollack and Bell to talk about a potential matchup with Anderson Silva, whether or not he ever felt the sport of MMA would get this popular, if he has thought about wrestling in the Olympics, what he thinks of some of the other MMA fighters, and if he plans on moving up in weight to fight Anderson Silva.
On a potential matchup with Anderson Silva:
“Yes. I would have to go up in weight, but I’m not concentrating on that fight yet because I have Jake Shields in front of me. If I would have to change my weight I would have to have a complete reorientation of my career so we will see what happens after the fight.”
Whether or not he felt MMA would end up being as popular as it is:
“I knew it would be popular I just didn’t know how fast it would take to grow that much.”
Whether or not he has thought about wrestling in the Olympics:
“No not right now because it would implicate the fight. I would have to train 100 percent wrestling and stop everything else to be at that level. I’m not ready to do that right now.”
On Jon Jones emerging as one of the better athletes in the UFC:
“Jon Jones is actually my training partner. We have trained together many times, I actually trained with him for the last fight. He’s a great athlete and it’s fun to see great athletes, but in a combat sport it’s not about athleticism, it’s about knowledge and technique ya know.”
On the best pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC aside from himself:
“Right now Anderson Silva or Jose Aldo are known as the best pound-for-pound.”
If he is going to fight Anderson Silva next:
“It depends on the outcome of the fight. It depends what happens in the future. It would take time for me to get the weight and a complete reorientation of my career. Because if I go up in weight, I’m not going to go back down. I would have to sit down with my coaches and see what’s the next move to do, what’s the smartest move to do.”
