Charles Barkley on Shaquille O’Neal Possibly Getting a TV Job: “Somebody is gonna be fired whether it’s at TNT or ESPN”

While ESPN does a great job with their coverage of the NBA Finals on both TV and radio, it doesn’t compare to TNT. As I continue to watch the series between the Mavericks and the Heat unfold I can’t help but miss the TNT crew and wonder what Charles Barkley has to say about what is going on. Barkley is the best going on TV because he is brash, he is opinionated, and doesn’t hold back. The good thing about the Chuckster is that he is just the same way when he conducts radio interviews as well so it doesn’t take much to find out what he thinks about Shaquille O’Neal retiring, the comments Scottie Pippen made about LeBron James maybe passing Michael Jordan one day, and of course the NBA Finals.

Charles Barkley joined The Dan Patrick Show to talk about Shaq retiring, whether or not he thinks he will get a TV analyst gig somewhere, if he would be welcome on the set of TNT, what he thought of Scottie Pippen’s comments, and gives his thoughts on the NBA Finals.

Whether or not the set on TNT is big enough to add Shaq to it:

“Of course it is. Shaquille O’Neal is a great person, he’s very smart, and I’m joking but I’m serious, somebody is gonna be fired whether it’s at TNT or ESPN. He’s gonna get a TV job if he wants it. Somebody is getting their final walking papers as we speak because he’s going to have his choice of where he wants to go.”

Whether or not he thinks Shaq will get a TV gig somewhere:

“Yes. He’s got an open invitation. He’s in a unique situation. He can do whatever he wants to do. Remember he’s done all this other TV stuff, he doesn’t have to do basketball commentating. He’s got a lot of things covered and he’s in a totally different situation too.”

On what he first thought when he heard Scottie Pippen’s comments about LeBron James possibly passing Michael Jordan:

“No my thought was Scottie lives in Miami, Florida and he was just trying to kiss up to the Heat. Scottie lives in Miami, I thought he wanted some free tickets to the Finals so he just said that. That is 100 percent what I thought. (Host: I would love to have heard Jordan when he first saw that?) He might’ve erased Scottie’s number out of his phone. You know how M.J. is. He might’ve erased Scottie out of his phone.”

If he thinks LeBron is too unselfish at times:

“Oh no question about that. LeBron is the best player in the NBA. To be a great player you have to be selfish. I think he a lot of times hes not selfish enough, but hes the best player in the NBA. You see why I think Dwyane is a better closer for that team because he has a more aggressive personality. When people think selfish they don’t understand that to be great you have to be selfish to a certain degree. You have to want to be there and you have to want to kill the other guy youre playing against. To me he’s a guy that would prefer to pass the ball first.”

Whether or not he has ever guarded Dirk Nowitzki:

“I have guarded him before. You can’t guard that guy. What you’re trying to do is you try to be real physical against him and don’t let him get to the basket. Sometimes you have to give the other guy credit. If he’s gonna make that one-legged fade away you just have to shake his hand after the game and say that’s too good. Nobody can stop that kid. He’s fantastic.”

  2. I don’t think Shaq will make a good commentator unless he learns how to speak louder, clearer and without mumbling…and has something worth saying. In his interviews you can’t really understand a lot of what he says and he is very short on his words……sorry Shaq!

  3. I think Scottie is completely wrong about his comment’s on LeBron James passing Michael Jordan. First, to become a great all time player, you should be able to keep your composure on the coat, it doesn’t matter what kind of person you are with your family, but all i know, LeBron has a long way in front of him before making true Scottie Pippen’s Comment. Michael Jordan left a lot of “DRAMA” in the NBA history that LeBron is so far away.
