The Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles both come into Monday Night Football riding two game winning streaks. The Bears are seeing improvement on their offensive line and look to close the gap in the NFC North. The Eagles may finally be hitting their stride after a very rough start to the season.
Michael Vick and LeSean McCoy put on a show last week against Dallas that would make any team in the National Football League scared about trying to defend them. Chicago has had some success in slowing down Philadelphia’s potent offense over the years. Lovie Smith is looking forward to the challenge tonight and knows his defense can match up well against the Eagles.
Lovie Smith joined WBBM in Chicago with Josh Liss to discuss the Chicago Bears keeping their momentum rolling into Philadelphia, the Bears starting offensive line being together for the third week in a row, throwing a few different wrinkles in the Bears defense to stop Michael Vick, containing LeSean McCoy and the excitement the Chicago Bears have to take on the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football.
How crucial is it for the Chicago Bears to keep the momentum going tonight and get a road win in Philadelphia?
“It’s big. It’s a huge game for us. What you are seeing in the NFL is the better teams are starting to distance themselves a little bit. We want to be one of those teams.”
You got the same offensive line starting for the third week in a row. What are your expectations of your front five?
“Just continue to improve play. That was a long time ago with those loses you talk about. We feel like we have straightened out those things and the last couple of times we have played we played well. You mentioned the third time the team is playing with the same offensive line. We should be okay.”
Michael Vick is like no other quarterback. No other defense seems to handle him better than yours. Are you throwing a few new wrinkles in the defensive attack?
“Each week we add a few new wrinkles, but there’s still a core we believe in of how we play defense that seems to match up well against an athletic guy like Michael Vick, and one of the reason is just we’re pretty athletic too. We have an athlete at all 11 positions, and you need that against him.”
What are you drilling in your defenders heads to stop LeSean McCoy?
“Number one is just be distant in our gap. They have a lot of offensive weapons, but the core skill guys are the same group that we played last year, so we have an idea of what they bring to the table and we think we can match up.”
Take the temperature of your team. How excited are they to go to Philadelphia tonight?
“I tell you we are pretty excited. It’s one thing when you get a chance to watch all the teams play. A lot of great games yesterday and we want to put on a good show on a national stage.”
