Carmelo Anthony is ‘Overly Excited’ to Return from Injury, Laughs at Critics who Think he can’t Co-Exist with Jeremy Lin

February 16, 2012 – 6:00 am by Steven Cuce

Jeremy Lin may be taking the NBA world by storm, helping lead the New York Knicks to seven consecutive victories since being inserted into the starting lineup. Some Fans, however, ares concerned that when Carmelo Anthony returns from his groin injury, the team’s chemistry will suffer. Much of the talk this week has centered around the idea that all of a sudden Anthony won’t be able to co-exist with Lin. If anything Lin is going to be a tremendous help for Anthony because now he can play his natural position and will not even have to worry about playing point guard.

Give No.7 some credit here as well. He’s stayed extremely humble after being under heavy fire from both the New York and national media. It was Anthony who had suggested to Mike D’Antoni during the New Jersey Nets game that Lin should get more playing time.

Melo has been there every step of the way congratulating the Knicks break out point guard. He won’t take any of the credit based off his comments in this interview and simply just can’t wait to get back out on the floor.

Carmelo Anthony joined WFAN in New York with Mike Francesa to discuss returning to the New York Knicks lineup on Friday, being shocked by the play of Lin, pushing Mike D’Antoni to play Lin last week, being able to co-exist with Lin and Amar’e Stoudemire, the best way to play offense when Lin, he and Stoudemire are all in the lineup, his excitement to return to the lineup, and being depicted unfairly by the New York media.

When will you be back for the Knicks? Friday?

“I don’t know. I don’t know. Just take it day-by-day. I don’t want to put a timetable on it. I’m getting better though. That is a plus.”

Are you shocked to see this thing happen with Jeremy Lin?

“I’m glad that it is happening. I am super excited about it. We are winning basketball games, so of course I’m definitely excited, but as far as what Jeremy Lin is doing and what is he bringing to the game right now, bringing to our team, I have never seen nothing like it before from a guy like that who started out in the D-League. Now he got his opportunity and sometimes in sports it’s takes one opportunity and he is taking advantage of that.”

Is it true that you went to Mike D’Antoni and asked him to give Jeremy Lin a chance?

“Well I mean at the time we were just kind of experimenting with the lineup and just figure out what the team and trying to figure out ways to win the basketball games. He threw Jeremy out there in the Boston game. We almost had a chance to win that game. We came back against Chicago and the New Jersey game in the second half, Jeremy just lifted us over the top and from there sky is the limit.”

What are your thoughts on the people that say when you come back that Jeremy Lin, Amar’e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony can’t play together? How about that?

“I laugh at that. I laugh at that. It is what it is. You just take it in stride. I am enjoying the time right now and watching Lin and the team do well. Guys are stepping up. I got hurt and guys are stepping up. We winning basketball games, but that’s the most important thing. As far as what other people are saying? That’s somebody else’s opinion. I know what I can do and bring to the court and know what I bring to the game. My teammates know that. Will I have to make adjustments? Yeah maybe. My adjustment is going back to playing my natural position and not try to be a point guard. That’s the adjustment. I’ll figure out. I am very smart basketball player and I want to go out there and play ball. I can’t worry about what everyone else is thinking.”

What is the best way for you, Jeremy Lin and Amar’e Stoudemire to play in this system?

“That’s fine. The system and everything goes like that. As basketball players? I think Jeremy is a smart basketball player. I know I think Amar’e is a smart basketball player. I believe myself as a smart basketball player. We will figure it out. I am not going to sit here and say: ‘Oh I am going to do this and we are going to do this.’ We are going to go out there and play basketball and continue to play the way they have been playing right now and try to win basketball games.”

Are you excited about it?

“I am overly excited about it. I can’t wait to get back out there on the court.”

Do you think you have been depicted fairly in this town?

“It’s cool. Who am I to say yay or nay? I live with it. I tighten up my belt and keep on moving. I know what I was brought here to do and that’s to win basketball games and hopefully one day win a championship, so as far as listening to people and what they say? It is what it is. I don’t lose no sleep over that.”
