C.J. Wilson Isn’t Mad the Texas Rangers Did Not Offer Him Free Agent Contract But Was Upset Club ‘Wasted’ His Time

April 13, 2012 – 9:00 am by Steven Cuce

One of the biggest stories of the MLB hot stove last December was C.J. Wilson moving on from the Texas Rangers and signing with their biggest rival the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Wilson, a Los Angeles native, didn’t see the huge issue of signing with the Angels considering that’s where he grew up. Texas Rangers fans would think otherwise.

Well it turns out the Rangers may have never wanted their former ace back in the first place. Here’s Wilson’s take on being dissed in free agency by Texas.

C.J. Wilson joined The Dan Patrick Show to discuss what he thinks is the most unfriendly ballpark to pitchers, the Texas Rangers bypassing him and using all their money on Yu Darvish, pranking Mike Napoli by releasing his cell phone number and the crowd reaction when he faces the Texas Rangers for the first time on the road.

Which is the most unfriendly ballpark to pitchers?

“Unfriendly to pitchers? Cincinnati is pretty hitter friendly. I would probably say there. Cincinnati or Yankees Stadium maybe down the lines is pretty short, so there’s a lot of home runs that go out that maybe would be outs in other places.”

Did you feel slighted that the Texas Rangers used all that money on Yu Darvish and not you?

“No not really. They are entitled to do whatever they want. It’s their money. I just…the only thing I was to get upset about was that they kept saying ‘Oh hey we are going to make an offer. We are going to come at you or whatever and they didn’t.’ It kind of wasted my time, which I feel like especially in the off-season my time is invaluable because the longer the off-season the more fun things I can do. If I was able to make a decision in early November then that would have been a lot easier for me. They dragged it out a month making me think they were going to make an offer, but the fact that they didn’t is no big deal. The fact that they paid so much money for Darvish and it’s their prerogative. They can spend that money anyway they want.”

Explain Mike Napoli’s cell phone number being released. Was that meant to be a prank or was it an accident?

“Well it was a prank of course. I thought the part that was supposed to be funny was that I made it look like I was giving him my phone number, so everybody that would call him would be like ‘Hey C.J. and then he’s like this isn’t C.J.! This is Mike Napoli!’ People would be like oh my gosh it’s Mike Napoli, which is kind of funny when you think about it, but nobody liked it besides me and my friends and my teammates and people on the Rangers didn’t think it was very funny, so whatever. Sometimes you take a risk like that and you risk some sort of negative backlash or whatever, but I’m not an expert level prankster. I’m just a guy that likes to throw pranks once and awhile. I learned my lesson. You can only prank people with a sense of humor, I guess.”

How do you think the homecoming against the Texas Rangers will be?

“You know I could have gone to any team and it would still be the same. A lot of people were like oh you went to the Angels? I am from LA, so where else would I rather go?”

  4. What a DB. How old is? “The more fun things I can do!” Sounds like he’s 12. God should not have wasted that talent or those looks on such an idiot.

  5. Texans don’t dislike you because you went to the Angels. They dislike you cause you’re an self absorbed dick head. Buy a clue.

  6. Pjrack: he gets a few months off from October to February, and the rest of his year is extremely grueling work, travel, and adherence to regimen; players barely get to see their families during the seasons. Hate on a guy, though, for wanting to be able to go on vacation sooner instead of having to sit around being monkey-barred by the Rangers for most of the Winter Meetings.

Lisa: ad hominems are not very ladylike, nor are they any sort of warrant whatsoever. Rangers fans don’t like him because he went to the rival for more money and they’ll take any excuse to hate on him.

  7. you know why we never made an offer??? BECAUSE YOU SUCK!!!!!!!! you had a five-start winless streak in the playoffs (0-3, 5.86 ERA over that span). Wilson won his first career playoff game in the 2010 ALDS and never won again!!!!!!

  8. Gimpy, Rangers fans don’t care about what happens in personal life for the most part, see our center fielder and manager. People are human, they make mistakes. CJ’s sense of humor is different than most, but who cares. To publicly give out someone of stature’s private number is extremely disrespectful, and he doesn’t see it as that. Our intelligent fans won’t dislike him for going to the Angels, they’ll dislike him for being our opponent. I loved him here, and I am still a fan, but I just wish he was more cognizant of his actions. He was a great pitcher here when used correctly (in relief he couldn’t pitch on back to back days, which people didn’t realize, they just saw the bad occasional results).

As for their off-seasons, they can go on vacations and do whatever they want, his agent is the one who takes care of the rest. He is a single guy, so he doesn’t have to worry about his family at this point of his life. CJ is immature and extremely arrogant, which is fine, everyone has their flaws, lord knows I do. You just have to live with the repercussions of your actions.

  9. If I’m wrong I’m sorry. But in this article It says CJ wanted to remain a Ranger, But the Rangers kept putting him off telling him “soon” but was to occupied at the time bidding on Darvish. In all honestly I wish the Rangers would have got…ten a deal done with CJ back when he first asked. I believe Lee left because of greed. I believed Wilson did the same, Until I read this article. Know I wanna here Jon & Nolan’s side of the story. – Lets Go Rangers –

  10. Yes Wilson is a Post Season Bum. but remind your self who it was who got us there in the first place.

By Gerg on Apr 13, 2012

  11. no one cared he left. the rangers were nice enough to give him a try like many young newbies, and he always slipped up under pressure time and time again. we let him go. that’s that. who cares what team he goes to. I’m just glad he went to a team that we play against. Get ready for a huge era season Wilson.

  12. Choke Job Wilson is a world class douche. He thinks he is Ansel Adams, Bob Gibson, Bear Grylls, and Bill Brasky rolled into one.

By killyourselfCJ on Apr 13, 2012

  13. Gimpy, you’re right and I appologize. I appreciate the call out. I liked CJ when he was a Ranger and I understood when he left. I’m just tired of him saying we’re all mad he went to the Angels when really I just feel, based on things he’s said that he’s an arrogant jerk who cares little about, and shows no respect to, the team he played with prior. His teammates had nothing to do with negotiations, so why disrespect them?

Also, Gerg, we made it to the post season as a TEAM. He didn’t do it alone. None of the Rangers have the “I” attitude so let’s not have that mentality either.

  15. Evidently, Nolan and Jon Daniels made a decision they felt was the BEST overall for the team. Since these two have been handling personnel acquisitions and contracts for the Rangers, this club has done nothing but become a force in the American League. CJ should be grateful to the Rangers organization for what it provided him, and thankful for the opportunity to be part of such a great ballclub. End of story. See ya in the salt mines, CJ. Hello Darvish. Everybody can’t be wrong about your talents.

  16. Holland was just as good as CJ last year and 10x better in the playoffs. CJ was a bad pickup fr us for the money we gave him. He’s not a front of a rotation pitcher. Too many pitches and walks. Good thing he fits in our rotation near the back where he really belongs

By AnglesFan on Apr 13, 2012

  17. Wilson never fit in here it Texas. He’s a girlie man who lived in Beverly Hills and always resented being away from the left coast. Now he can hang out in West Hollywood and cry about how the Rangers treated him. He got paid by the Angels but he won’t be getting a World Series ring there. Rangers are the class of the AL not the Angels.
