Judge Jerry Roth on Pacquiao-Bradley: “How anybody could see that fight so one-sided is beyond me”

June 12, 2012 – 7:15 am by Chris Fedor

Saturday night’s fight between Manny Pacquiao and Timothy Bradley had one of the most controversial decisions that I can remember in the sport of boxing. Analysts, writers and talk show hosts have all voiced their frustration with Bradley winning a split decision over Pacquiao. All three judges had the fight close and all three have spoken out and defended their decision. There was one judge who had Manny Pacquiao winning. It was veteran Nevada boxing judge Jerry Roth. The boxing public tends to side with him.

Roth joined ESPN Radio 1100 in Las Vegas with Cofield and Cokin to explain his scoring from Saturday night’s fight, whether he is surprised that many in the media thought the fight was lopsided, if the criticism the judges have received gets to him, whether he has ever been called in front of the commission to explain his scoring and if he thinks judges from outside need to be brought in to judge mega-fights.

On his scoring from Saturday night’s fight:

“Well there were a lot of close rounds but I thought in the early part of the fight Pacquiao was doing very good. In fact I gave him five of the first six rounds. Then in the latter part of the fight I thought he just didn’t do enough. He didn’t have that killer instinct he usually has. He was sort of backing up, Bradley was coming on and I thought coming on fairly strong. That’s why I gave four of the last six rounds to Bradley and ended up a two point fight, seven to five.”

Whether he is surprised that many in the media thought the fight was lopsided:

“Yes I’m completely surprised at anybody that could score the fight 11-1. I don’t know how they could’ve done something like that. We judge round by round. We sit there for three minutes, judge the round and give the scores to the referee and that’s it. We don’t talk about in the fourth round how we scored the third round or talk to people to our left or to our right, we’re concentrating on that fight and that fight only. How anybody could see that fight so one-sided is beyond me. I just can’t fathom that somebody could see such a fight so one-sided.”

If the criticism the judges have received gets to him:

“I know it’s going to get to me because I blame a lot of it on TV. People watch television and they hear Harold (Lederman) and some of the other people talking and they say it’s such a one-sided fight and that’s the way they see it. When I watch a fight, when I watch the playback of a fight, I turn the sound down and watch it, then I score. When I hear the scores that are going to be 11-1, 10-2 or scores of this nature, I know there’s going to be controversy and of course there was.”

Have you ever been called in front of the commission to explain your scoring?

“No. (Host: Does that ever happen? Is there ever an investigation into the scoring?) I can’t answer that. I know that I was never investigated on scoring, ever. I’ve been doing this for over 30 years. (Would you be open to explaining why you scored something the way you did?) Absolutely, sure. (Host: Do you think the sport needs that?) No. I mean all three judges had the fight very close. We were all watching it from three different angles. To me, it was a close fight.”

Whether he thinks judges from outside Nevada need to be brought in to judge mega-fights:

“Maybe I’m biased okay but I think Nevada has some of the best judges in the world. We practice it for a long time, we’ve had a lot of fights here and I’m not one that really likes the idea of bringing in a lot of people from out of town. Sometimes people come in from out of town and they have a lot of even rounds or they do this or that or they come from different parts of the world. We try to watch fights, see fights, so that we’re uniformed and we do the best we can to be uniformed and I think we have the best officials in the world right here.”

That logic doesn’t make any sense. Mayweather backs up for a full 36 minutes of every fight of his career except against Cotto and Mosley but he’s undefeated. Pacquiao used effecting slipping/blocking to make Bradley miss an incredible 81% of his punches! Going forward and MISSING is not the same thing as going forward and HITTING!

  3. The Pacquiao-Bradley fight last Saturday needs a proper authority’s investigation on what went wrong in the process of judging. The competent investigators upon their findings will recommend for the sanctions or punitive actions to the two judges and implement whatever will be the recommendations. At the extent part of actions to be taken, if there need be, strip Bradley of the undeserved victory to ventilate and restore the dignity and integrity the sport of boxing.

  4. A million people watching globally in general concedes that pac unanimously won the fight in a landslide. I myself saw the fight and was just finishing my breakfast and smugly waiting for the verdict to be announced in Packy’s favour. So onesided was the fight that I was so startled to hear the finsal verdict that i thought I heard it wrongly.

So what makes these 3 judges’s decision so vastly different from the rest of the world? because they were assigned to officially do it does not mean that they are correct when the majority of other people who have seen the fight saw something else opposed to what the final call was.

  5. the fans, the fighters and the boxing itself need JUSTICE, fight of this magnitude shall be insulated from game fixing, ask Arum if he had a hand on this. This incident paves the way out of boxing, HELLO UFC…..

By Nanz on Jun 12, 2012

  6. The response of this judge solidified the reason as to why he should no longer judge fights, especially Pacquiao’s fights. He states “Then in the latter part of the fight I thought he just didn’t do enough. He didn’t have that killer instinct he usually has.” The very fact that he is comparing Pac’s current performance to past performances can only mean he was swayed by some high expectations. Just because Bradley “survived”, doesn’t automatically mean he was doing well. He should be judging what he is seeing, not what he is expecting.

By Jim on Jun 12, 2012

  7. Also, the rest of us were not high on bath salt while watching the fight. The only way somebody could see this as a win, or even close to a win for Bradley had to be high on drugs.

My solution, follow Mayweather’s advice for random drug testing, but include refs and judges along with the fighters.

By Brett on Jun 12, 2012

  8. Bradley was running away and avoiding and scared in the last many rounds. Bradley was a combination of Cotto, Mosley and Clottey in the last few rounds where he would run and avoid, punch a bit, and run and avoid. Among them four, he may be the better boxer but he was still running. And the fight was not even a close fight than the last Marquez fight and Manny won that. How come then this judge can give he win to Bradley? This judge is the one who’s one sided for Bradley.

  9. No matter explanation this 2 judges will say, bottom line is that there to old to see and they need to retire, I am o boxing fan but last saturday i think boxing is so dirty and i would not want see any of that crap anymore. come on Mr. Roth be honest (how much money did you get from this fight) HA.

  10. They have to protect their decisions ofcourse… close figth my foot! Iam 100% agree with Brett Floyd usually backing up the whole 12 rounds.. where is the logic pacman backing up to lay some traps cause bradly dont want to engage anymore. the effective agressiveness ang ring generalship oviously are for pacman I gave Tim a creadit to hung in ther but, He just outclass big time with clear and power punches. judges just want to protect their butts…

By Rob Dizon on Jun 12, 2012

  11. He is too old to be a boxing judge, when he said ” pacquiao was sort of backing up” it doesn’t make sense at all. On the 2nd half of the fight pacquiao was consistently pursuing bradley to knock him out but to no avail coz bradley was the one backing up and afraid to engage.

  12. I had seen the replay from the tape i recorded. The only round i could give to Bradley was the 10th round.Been a boxing enthusiast since
1959.I should know something about how to observe from a fight who’s the boxer who wins!! Can’t i?
Too evident.Pacquiao did not lose that fight.
And he was backing up? The other guy(Bradley) was the one backing up.Pacquiao does not have a history of backing up.He always go forward.
Holy Toledo!! Somebody from the government needs to get into this mess and really fix this.
Let’s just be honest here,Bradley did not win that fight.I will respect him much if he can return that belt to either WBO or Pacquiao and maybe both of you guys can do the rematch.
There is always a lingering question if he keeps that belt.

By marco briones on Jun 12, 2012

  14. Look closely at ford’s 1st response to scoring. Pacman had 5 out of the 1st 6. Then had 2 out of the last 6 rounds. Simple math would shows he had it 7-5 for pacman not Bradley. Where did Bradley win the extra rounds?

    By Kyle k on Jun 12, 2012

  15. I totally agree with Neil P. These judges were bought. Money is the No. 1 evil. How can you not see the dominance of Pacman in the fight? Have you counted the power punch? Have you considered the percentage of punch thrown as against the punch that make a hit? For 3 judges having the same score with one going to Pacman is impossible. The only explanation is for you guys to talk about it before the fight.

    By Gemini2run2 on Jun 12, 2012

  16. The controversy is so easy to explain… THE JUDGES ARE BIASED… They are all Americans… and that includes the referee, the promoters, the venue and location, etc. Only one Asian in all of these – Manny Pacquiao. That explains it… lol

By Buddy Guzman on Jun 12, 2012

  17. I agree that Pacquiao has lost his killer instinct. He could have finished Bradley in the 5th or sixth round when Bradley was stunned and yet for the frist 2 minutes of the succeeding rounds he just bobbed and weaved hardly throwing a punch! Somehow, I suspect that Arum instructed him not to knockout Bradley!

By Fred on Jun 12, 2012

  18. The result of the fight was well-planned, all of the judges scored 115-113 with one one judge favoring pacquiao. If the fight was close the scoring maybe indebatable, but it was so lopsided that even little kid watching the fight would who really know who the winner was…
Of course if judges eyes were being covered with millions of bucks how can they see rightly?

By marco briones on Jun 12, 2012

  19. jerry roth used to be good but has been slipping. he was on of the judges that gave rios a win over abril – an even worse decision than this one. duane ford, on the other hand, gave manny 115-113 last time in the jmm3 fight so maybe he took some flak then and thought he could avoid it by giving bradley a break. bottom line, these once-great judges should retire. bring in some younger, fresher blood.

By rasec on Jun 12, 2012

  20. Ooh if that’s the case, maybe i should enter boxing cuz now i know that just by punching as many as i can without landing anything i can be be the winner..(at least thats what bradley did) and by the way i think mr. roth needs his eyes to be examined because when i watched the tape “without the sound” i did not saw bradley being the fighter who controlled the fight neither having the killer instinct, that manny had at least he showed it trough half of the fight and what i saw that night was just survival instinct. HE WAS THE ONE BACKING UP not pacquiao! now i know that boxing today is NOT about landing effective, high volume, clean punches. but now its about ineffective, (or what i call “air punch” cuz the punches did not landed) high volume unclean punches ” may be that will impress the judges”. I think you guys need’s to transfer your judging ability’s on a world pageant. there u can judge accurately cuz contestants are great on impressing not by boxing! how absurd!

By waldrich Friley on Jun 12, 2012

  21. Addendum:
Or better still,Bradley can do a magnanimous gesture.Meet with Pacquiao,do a press conference, tell the world that Pacquiao was the winner and give him back the belt.
    Can (Bradley) do that?
That will get him more fans and respect.
    Then do the rematch.
Remember, the people who watched the fight were not only from the States. There were millions from other countries who woke up early
or stayed late just to witness a miscarriage of justice. They ain’t gonna like that.
Those millions out there, though you consider them as 3rd world people,or undeveloped, they still believe in fair play and honesty.
They abhor injustice. And last Saturday, they witnessed a grave one.

By mellow on Jun 12, 2012

  34. Jerry Roth was using the example 11-1 landslide as an excuse because alot of fans that I read that wrote on boxing blogs are not saying that. Majority are saying 9-3 or 8-4 for Manny. The 8-4 was being generous. The questions are the scorecards of CJ Ross and Duane Ford. we’ll use for arguement for example The rounds that they gave to Bradley for example the 5th and 8th round, Manny was the more effective fighter and with cleaner hits. You can start from those two rounds alone and figure out how they could have even score that for Bradley. Or how about the second round that CJ Ross scored for Bradley? The scoring does not reflect with the way the fight was fought round by round.

  42. In my honest oppinion have of those complaining on Here that it was such a controversey that pacquiao lost is just a pacman fan. I am a pacmam fan and i had Bradley wining a few of those close rounds. It was a very close and competetive fight and Bradley boxing skills and foot work was amazing then most of his last rights. Pacquiao hasn’t been so impressive in his last 2 bouts and he should have stepped it up in this one and knocked Bradley on his ass like he knocked out the first few fighters those were one sided fights. Pacquiao simply didn’t do enough he got to comfortable which caused him to lose the rounds he did pacquiao missed so many punches with Bradley ducking and moving he normally is very accurate and wasn’t this time. There was mabe 5 good punches I’n the whole fight that backed Bradley up not hurt but backed em up and Bradley also had punches backing pacquiao up. Through out the whole commentary all I heard was about pacquiao nothing Bradley was doing why? Because its pacquiao and its clear favortism. In my opinion pacquiao should have known he was going in their with an American boxer that’s undefeated and has a tremendous career of boxing especially before becoming a proffessional and should have known to really win this fight he had to rely on speed an slower not points pacquiao has never been much of a boxer and he looks uncomfortable when other boxers begin to box against him rather then standing toe to toe which is why Bradley chnaged his game plan after round 5. It was a very close fight but the pacquiao every one knows never showed up and the Bradley that’s undefeated and been wining his fights was there and gave it his all credit is given where its due. I couldn’t believe the nonsense coming out of the commentators mouth for boxing experts they should open there eyes and not be so favored toward a boxer but comment on each and every aspect if the fight that’s happening with both fighters. To me there was no cobtroversey I’m a big fan of pacquiao and now even a bigger fan of Bradley and in ny opinion pacquiao and mayweather will go down the same way mayweather will out class pacquiao.

  43. It seems that Jerry Roth is part of this conspiracy playing his role as the one to split the verdict.

Everyone else other than these three saw a clear lead, the fight wasn’t close.

  44. Hey all: I’m a fan of da Pacman, and there’s no doubt Pac won the fight. But: after round 6 Manny it appeared to us watching the fight that Pacman was tired. Granted, he’s 33, but he slowed down and was no longer dominating rounds. The first 5 rounds -except for the 2nd round – were easy, Pacman victories. But Manny took a round or two off, and even the first half of several other rounds. This opened the door for a Bradley-biased official. Manny needs to KO opponents, or be in better shape. Freddie Roach – your fighter wasn’t in shape for a 12 round brawl!

  45. As a citizen, I believe that pacquiao win, Americans know what is right or wrong, Americans are not cheaters, I believe in democracy.I think they should review the tape and if they find out that this judges fix their scores they should get charge and wont judge on boxing again. That’s my opinion.

By unkown on Jun 12, 2012

  46. Pacman hurt Bradley on several occasions, and Pac went for the KO at least once. Bradley never hurt Pac. In the last few rounds if Pacman had just stood in the center of the ring and called on Bradley to fight -instead of run, or retreat, he would have won. Against counter-punchers, the “fighter” needs to stand and beckon the runner to fight – not run.

By Drake on Jun 12, 2012

  48. Roth, you intentionally scored 115-113 instead of a rational 118-112 to fit in the split decision banditry of which you are a connivant, you smelly old man! You can hardly read anything in front of you and you want us to believe that you can actually and clearly follow what was commencing very, very fast in the ring, which even a young person with a 20/20 vision and excellent mental faculties would have difficulty assessing? You cheat! I hope this become a federal crime and you rot in prison with your boss Kizer! Why don’t you retire, you fossil!

    injustice, racket, dishonesty
breach of trust, bribery, crookedness, fraud, payoff, racket, sham.
The judges should be investigated then charged with malfeasance and fired.

The disgrace I witness last night has ruined boxing forever!!! The FBI needs to investigate because the fight was fixed, Manny was robbed, and the fans of boxing were disrespected beyond words. The judges should be investigated and their licenses revoked!!!!

Manny Pacquiao won the Fight Clearly without question. Decent Hard Working Folks went to Nevada during a RECESSION and bet on this bout believing it was a Legitimate event. If the Verdict is not RIGHTED, then that will mean that the State of NEVADA is not engaging in Legitimate Gaming Business and is no more honorable than the Mafia.

I have never witnessed such an outright crazy plot to rip off the title and give it to Bradley who almost got knocked out. That is why he may have broke his foot. Manny’s power was clearly too much for him. I have been a loyal boxing fan for 25 to 30 years and have never witnessed something so outright blatant. Just dirty politics as usual, the men with their dirty money. We all know who really won this fight. The next one should be at the stadium in Texas where there are no fixes. Make it fair. Manny will knock Bradley out this time. Shame on you Vegas, not cool. You ripped us all off!! Beware Bradley. You got a pity win.

  56. #1 Bad judging – judges should be reprimanded or fired. #2 Fight outcome needs to be null and title given back to Manny. #3 Bad history of unfair off-the-wall judging in the state of Nevada.

They need to interviewed the judges. Did they even watch the fight. I know they were paid off.

R.I.P Boxing…….these judges are just few of the many judges that have obviously killed this amazing sport….how could someone be dominating the whole fight lose? Thanks to these judges, they made that happen. They should be investigated, reprimanded and penalized. After that, ship them to Afghanistan and let them fend for themselves.

I saw that fight and clearly manny won the fight without a doubt, the way judges score fights now a days is a disgrace for the sport of boxing. If this decision is not overturned and given to the rightful winner or at least give Manny back his belt, I for one am not paying to see the rematch. I think that all true fans of manny paquiao like myself should boycott the rematch and not pay for it. Because of judges like those, boxing will crumble into darkness. It is heart breaking and downright disgraceful to do this to Manny Pacquiao, his team, fanbase and even pure boxing fans. For all that Pacquiao has given to Nevada, the judges, commission and whoever involved screw him over just to get richer. A change needs to happen and investigation if these judges and even Top Rank promoter Bob Arum. Bradley was quoted telling Arum, “i tried hard, but i just couldnt beat him” before the decision was made. Bradley’s wife thought he lost, the look on Bradley’s corner men thought he lost. Further evidence, people who hate or nit a bug fan of Manny Pacquiao like the Mayweather’s said Manny won the fight.
It was clear Manny won! This shows the world boxing is RIGGED – this isn’t WWE! I will NEVER buy PPV again, as well as the 25+ people I was with. Rematch could have still happened without this decision. The stats do not lie. Overturn is DEMANDED by the WORLD. Check ANY publication. Bradley LOST!! Show the world what is fair. Investigation is required for those 2 judges! People say boxing is rigged and officials are corrupt, and the the judges proved it with their decision.
NSAC needs to be investigated!! BLATANT CORRUPTION!!!
n my opinion Manny Pacquiao did win and I have more respect for him as he showed what it means to be a PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE. “I did my best, but I guess my best wasn’t good enough…respect the decision, but I 100% believe I won the fight. I hope this dismay doesn’t cause people to discard the sport. I’m still here. I can fight,” Pacquiao said. This isn’t Bradley’s fault, it’s bigger than that. I didn’t like Bob Arum’s comment as he said, “I’ll make a lot of money off the rematch, but this was outrageous.” Who’s to blame? I’m not sure who is at fault, but an investigation is needed. Keep boxing as a sport and not an act of entertainment.
    1. The two (2) judges need to be expelled;
    2. There should be strict criteria as to how to elect judges – i.e., they must really know what they are doing!
    3. Check Bob Arum’s real participation with this disgusting result!
    4. Manny to look for a real good, morally-motivated promoter!

This isn’t just an injustice to Manny Pacquiao, but an injustice to all the fans, and boxing as a whole. Boxing is in a real bind today, and this may be the low blow that DQ’s or TKO’s boxing for good. The result of this fight has only exasperated the situation. I implore that the decision for this fight be overturned and ruled in either Pacquiao’s favor, or at the very least a no contest. I am not speaking on the behalf of being a Pacquiao fan, I am speaking on the behalf of being a boxing fan. What’s right is right, and what’s wrong is wrong. The fight was clearly dominated by Pacquiao. This is one of the greatest robberies in sports history.

Boxing is on life support, and I’m afraid if this terrible travesty of what boxing has been reduced to isn’t corrected, then I hold dire reservations as to the future of the sport. Please honor us fans, honor this beloved sport and do the right thing. I appreciate your time, energy, and consideration.
The whole world was shocked with the result. How can you do this to Pacman! SHAME ON YOU JUDGES!!! Shame on you Bradley for accepting the belt . You know that you really dont deserve to win !!!

Disgracing the sport of boxing should never be condoned. Shame, shame, shame.
If we can’t show the hundred million people who viewed the game the Power of sportsmanship and honesty then we can never attain and expect equality and fairness iin this lifetime and in all sectors of any organizations. Have we lost the only Pride we have as human beings ….Respect and Dignity.

  57. What makes this terrible scandal bile-raising is that this “LIKEABLE” Bradley according to his “honest to goodness” image projection in 24/7, had the gall to look happy and victorious after he was announced the victor. GwaarrrkK!
I like the idea of a rematch if only because i’d like to see his and his trainer’s yuccky grin evaporate. Otherwise, I hate to see him paid nicely again because of his stomach-churning shamelessness! He doesn’t deserve any pay anymore, this cheat!

  59. They asked Bradley after the fight, “Did you think you won.”
Bradley responded, “I have to check the tape.”
    FAIL…
Hahaha, he doesn’t even know if he won..

Then they rewind the tape to show how he sprain his ankle… It mainly shows how he was getting beat up by power punches by Manny… funny.

Bradley said “I was just trying to get away from his punches.” lol.

He ran away the whole time in the court. I bet he felt Manny’s power punch.

If you can watch Timothy’s other boxing, he is the one chasing. This time he was being hunted by Manny, and nothing but a prey. No wonder he doesn’t know if he won.

  60. I paid $65 for this fight. Saw a great fight by Manny and was just disgusted by what happened. I had my boys watch the fight the next day without me telling them who won. They had Manny winning the fight 10 rounds to 2. How can a 14 and 15 year old get it right but professional judges are blind.

TWO JUDGES ARE GAY, THEY DONT LIKE MANNY. period.

  61. Even someone who is working for 30-40 years can make also a lot of mistakes. I got my glasses when I was 40 years old and now that I am 60, I need to review everything I did more than twice and sometimes more. And still I can find few mistakes. Judges need to review the tape and change it to slowmotion, so they can see very well, what really happened. They should correct those discrepancies. Imagine how many mistakes these judges committed for the last 30 yeats and still get away with it. It´s about time to clean corruption in boxing as well. Sports governing body is now cleaning fixed fighting in footbal, they need to vacuum dirty business in boxing too. We must not let this blunder go away. WE FANS GOT SCREWED.

  62. This is my thought. The money that was received from the casinos from betting on Bradley wouldn’t cover the amount of winnings for payout if Manny wins. So, the fact that almost all the people bet on Manny (lots of money came in), the enormous amount the casino would make just covering a small amount of money on Brad’s win made it clear that the judges has something to do with this decision. Arum may have not paid the judges, but the Casinos did!

  67. I think those judges are redneck who are prejudice to minorities. The way they judge the fight reflects their prejudice act against a Asians. Where the hell they got their points to justify Bradley’s win? I think it would be best to get these judges spend their lives in jail who have committed such big time fraud in front of worldwide viewers. The Federal government should do something on this in order that boxing sport won’t be dead.

  69. what a disgrace. I feel like a whole Nation was robbed not just Manny and his successful career. But the people of Philipines who were on a National Holiday to watch their Hero outperform Bradley.

Just saddening to see how corrupt boxing is.
Bob Arum screwed him over for the last time, wanting to make more money out of a trilogy and
what a shame money can do…

This needs to be investigated. And if i were bradley i would hand what Manny deserves.
Manny is a true champ and stayed Humble about this shameful event.
This has ruined the sport for many who have passion for/those who are true fans of 1 of the best boxers in the world Manny pacquaio This may be the worst decision anyone could witness.Completely cooked and bs without doubt.

Manny controled and man handled Bradley without questions asked. His foot work and power punches that landed was untouchable . his accurancy percentage was way higher. and how in the hell does someone loose from a 10 round shut out out 12 rounds?

this is Blasphemy, and by god this needs to be looked into.
looked like some WWF shit… Arum and those 3 judges need to be pounded and put into a hell in the cell match.

No words could explain my anger towards this decision.

Please people take the time out to sign this petition and tell your friends to do so as well . Manny was robbed and we need to make things right for him and give him the win that he was clearly robbed and deemed a loss .

Nevada must hold their judges accountable for this preposterous decision. If the current decision stands, the future of Nevada boxing is in jeopardy and the state could lose millions of dollars in revenue. Promoters will have no choice but to move their major prizefights to other states where the judging is reliable. The credibility of Nevada judging must be restored in the eyes of the public.

It was not right and fair for Pacquiao, to those who payed on PPV and bought a ticket to watch. Pay a bum to judge and give them a $100.00 each to get a fair and honest judgment. Common sense is better than those who don’t make sense.

We pay our hard earned money for these fights and not only the one which we feel cheated, but are loyal paying customers of many other fights. We deserve better than this! Clean up boxing, starting with this fight! A correcting a fight of this caliber and exposure would send a clear message to the public that corruption will no longer be tolerated and change is occurring in boxing. Please, do the right thing! BOXING IS DEAD, LONG LIVE MP. You are the real winner. investigate and fire the judges

“THE DECISION” Blatant disrespect for the sport and to a man who has worked for where he is for 17 years of his life then not give him the right to another look by the commission he always looks make right decisions! You cannot have the 99% of the boxing world and casual fans understand who the winner is and leave boxing in turmoil. Do not let this sport die.

  70. i have seen enough. these judges are totally blind. you know, for such a long time they are judging maybe their glasses are not good enough or maybe they have eye problems because of old ages or maybe time has come for them to retire that they may have dementia already that they forget to pick the real winner. anyway, i think they won’t need to judge anymore because you know, they have won the lottery in misjudging the fight. I think their bank accounts have enough money already after this fight.

Something seriously needs to be done quickly regarding the this type of bad scoring by judges.
A terrible decision like the one Saturday evening not only hurts the fighters but also the
fans & all the boxing outlets.
Tim Bradley should man-up & return the belt & still continue with rematch in November or
whenever he heals up – as one of comments was written.
And one of comments wrote that Sen. Reid should get involved & return a favor.
    And so he should!!

This very statement of his is a huge contradiction to what he said earlier: “Then in the latter part of the fight I thought he just didn’t do enough. He didn’t have that killer instinct he usually has. He was sort of backing up, Bradley was coming on and I thought coming on fairly strong. That’s why I gave four of the last six rounds to Bradley and ended up a two point fight, seven to five.”

Basing on his answer to the question on bringing in referees from outside Las Vegas he seems to be stating in strong terms that being UNINFORMED about the boxers whose performance are to be judged makes judges unbiased, but then from his own mouth he did not practice what he said as he said Manny Pacquiao did not have the killer instinct he usually had.

Bottom line is his EXPECTATIONS of Manny Pacquaio affected his scoring, which is he gave to Bradly the nod in the rounds where Manny failed to deliver his expectaions!

  105. I am fan of boxing for many years and still prefer the sweet science over emerging alternatives such as mixed martial arts (MMA and UFC), however, the decision victory given to Bradley over Pacquiao last June 9,2012 dampened my enthusiasm and strengthened my belief that the sport is controlled by organized gambling syndicate/mafia. In connection with this, I would like to present a new and highly plausible explanation on why and more importantly, how the gambling syndicate manipulated the key players and pulled the strings on their “puppet show” to determine the outcome of the match.
    1. Why was the fight rigged?
The organized gambling syndicate in boxing monitored the ongoing betting in connection with the fight in its vast network of betting stations – both legal and illegal- above ground and underground within the U.S. and around the world. Days before the fight, the betting figures could have soared to several hundred million dollars. For illustration purposes, we could say that approximately 10,000 bets were placed on Pacquiao by big time gamblers with an average bet of US$100,000 per bet for a total of US$1 Billion with an estimated return of about US$250Million in case of a Pacquiao win. Only around 1,000 big time bets averaging also US$100,000 on the other hand, were placed in favor of Bradley totaling US$100Million with a possible return of US$360 Million given a Bradley win. Given the huge amount of money to be earned, the gambling mafia of boxing decided to pull the strings to give Bradley the decision since they expected to earn US$1Billion from the Pacquiao bets and lose only around US$360Million to pay for the Bradley bets, thus generating a net earning of around US$640 Million- a gigantic amount that is hard to forego as it could even possibly surpass the combined potential earnings of broadcast networks, promotional companies, individual fighters and other beneficiaries of the proposed superfight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

    2. How the fight was rigged/how were the key players manipulated?
The gambling syndicate deployed covert operatives to manipulate the key players INDIVIDUALLY/SEPARATELY, notably- the three judges and most probably Pacquiao himself with a mix of misinformation, deception, bribe/pseudo-bribe and possibly, even threat.

2.1 Judge Ford and Ross. For the two judges who scored the bout in favor of Bradley, the operatives may have introduced themselves as members of an underground organization that loves boxing and seeks to keep the sport interesting and continually growing by trying to make bouts exciting and unpredictable and also ensure that new boxing superstars are continually produced. The operatives would (mis)inform the judges that they don’t care if either Pacquiao knocks out Bradley or vice-versa as both scenarios will bode well for the sport. A Pacquiao knock out will lead to a multi-million dollar showdown between Pacquiao and Mayweather, while a Bradley win by knockout or domination of Pacquiao will usher the rise of a new superstar and pave the way for a mouth-watering mega-million round robin among Pacquiao, Mayweather and Bradley. The operatives would tell the judges that their concern is if Pacquiao simply dominates Bradley as this will result to the latter being dismissed as a non-elite fighter and result to a dearth of boxing superstars and a decline of boxing once Pacquiao and Mayweather retire from the sport. The judges were then asked in the scenario of no knockout and domination of Bradley by Pacquiao to score the fight close but in favor of the former. This would not affect the outcome of the match as the two other judges would most likely score the bout in favor of Pacquiao. The “surprise” split decision would create some uncertainty and unpredictability in the sport and spur a continuing plot of controversies which could somehow translate to interest and excitement in boxing while at the same time sanitizing Bradley’s record in paper and “preserving” him as a future boxing superstar who could fill the void when Pacquiao and Mayweather leave the sport. The two judges were therefore tricked into believing that in the event of a no-knockout Pacquiao domination, they would only be playing a “mild” prank that would not alter the outcome of the match, but would help the sport sustain its momentum. On top of this sweet talk and deception, the judges may have also been bribed with six or seven digit figures and may have even been threatened by telling them that there is also a group that has invested millions to make Bradley the future boxing superstar, and that this group could possibly become hostile if their ends are not realized.

2.2 Judge Roth. The convincing on the judge that scored the bout close but in favor of Pacquiao followed the same pattern as discussed above for the two other judges except that the mild “prank” would involve scoring the bout close but in favor of Pacquiao in case the match turns out to be a Pacquiao domination but without a knockout.

2.3 Pacquiao. The gambling syndicate may also have employed a mix of deception, misinformation and possibly pseudo bribe, or even threat that had the pound for pound superstar fall victim and participate in the fix. An operative from the syndicate may have introduced himself/herself to Pacquiao as a member of a behind the scenes organization that seeks to promote the continued growth of boxing by ensuring the emergence of future boxing stars that would carry the torch when both him and Mayweather leave the sport. The operatives may have convinced Pacquiao that Bradley is a kind, humble person and a loving family oriented guy who has a similar rag to riches story and could therefore fill in the void when the pound for pound king retires from the sport. Knocking Bradley out will be detrimental to boxing as it will strike out from elite status a possible candidate superstar who could replace Pacquiao. It will curb the momentum of the sport by derailing Bradley’s rise and interfere with the sustaining plot of good vs. evil superstar matchups that had time and again proven to give the sport a boost. Pacquiao may have been asked by the (gambling syndicate) operative to just show his superiority and settle for a victory on points and also not to completely overwhelm Bradley. The deception of not going for a knockout for the future “good” of the sport may have been mixed with a pseudo bribe whereby Pacquiao may have been offered perhaps a few million dollars to be donated to his favorite charity or church organization or to finance projects for his congressional district in case he did not go for the kill or knockout. The operative may or may not have tossed in or hinted some form of threat by telling Pacquiao that there is a group that has invested millions for Bradley to be the future boxing superstar and they would likely be hostile in case the latter was knocked out.

Pacquiao may have been deceived by this manipulation and therefore took it easy on Bradley. This can be observed may times during the match. While Pacquiao has been known to dish out a lot of 4 or 5 punch combinations during matches in his entire career, these salvos were sparingly thrown during the match with Bradley. It is also hard to believe that while Bradley injured his ankle and could not fight one hundred percent during most of the match, the pound for pound king still could not finish him. In fact, there were several awkward instances in the fight when Bradley seemed to have lost his footing perhaps due to the injury and had his arms down at the same time, and because of the difficulty of regaining his footing due to the injury, seemed to have frozen for a moment like a sitting duck standing close to and within punching range of Pacquiao, but the latter did not try to throw even a single punch. Also several slow motion clips showed that when Pacquiao fired a combination and connects with a punch that throws Bradley offguard and thus more vulnerable to follow ups, the succeeding punches often miss their mark, possibly thrown by Pacquiao with the intention to miss or overshoot the target. Pacquiao seems to have willingly held off his offense in numerous occasions during the fight.

    3. Bob Arum. Although I know that Bob Arum is one of the power players of the sport who tries to exert his influence so that things (e.g. money) will play (flow) out in his favor, I cannot say if he was party to the manipulations or if he had prior knowledge of what happened . He may or may not, but I pity him for being tagged outright by some as brains of the fiasco.

    4. To sum up, the outcome of the fight was cleverly manipulated by the powers that be in boxing. The three judges and perhaps even Pacquiao were individually coaxed, cajoled and tricked into believing that they would only fight or do things a “little different” without really altering the outcome of the match in order to sustain the momentum of boxing. The three had no idea that they were to become puppets in an organized and cleverly orchestrated plot to manipulate the outcome of the match. Pacquiao knew that he was winning during the match but did not know that the judges had been bought. The individual judges on the other hand, thought that each of them were the only one to give a deviant score card which would not alter the outcome of the match. Six or seven digit bribes for the judges and pseudo bribes for Pacquiao in the form of donation to the boxer’s favorite charity, church organization or project for his congressional district, and some degree of threat may have been tossed in the mix to effect the convincing of the key players. Bradley was never part of the fix.

    5. Other high profile matches and how they were possibly rigged.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Victor Ortiz. Mayweather, possibly in partnership with Golden Boy Promotions could have likely rigged the fight. Victor Ortiz may have been reminded that he should be thankful and gratefully indebted to the organizers for awarding him the fight with the seven digit purse guarantee. Ortiz may have been told “Welcome to the big league son. It is time for you to know that at the highest level of boxing some matches are rigged to maximize the earnings and sustain the momentum of the sport.” A Mayweather defeat (against Ortiz) will derail the momentum of boxing and dampen the enormous earning potential of a Pacquiao-Mayweather showdown. Participating in the fix would be good for boxing and also for Ortiz who possibly could have been offered additional million dollar bonus which could be recouped by the perpetrators Mayweather/ and GBP by betting on the undefeated superstar. The script will not make Ortiz look bad, furthermore GBP will manage his career well, get him into good fights and make him the next boxing superstar after Pacquiao and Mayweather retire from the sport. With the referee bought to follow the script, Mayweather Jr. was so sure of the outcome and also of Ortiz’s complicity that he had been so arrogant and cocky to hold the latter (Ortiz) by the neck during the stare down session of the official weigh-in for the bout. Mayweather must have in mind that “I can hold and even choke you by the neck because I will be paying you big and you are my puppet.” Ortiz, given the bonus obliged to be the puppet and swallowed his pride by allowing the chokehold hang for quite some time. Mayweather in fact made a pronouncement in one of his interviews that at the highest level, boxing is no longer real anymore.
Dela Hoya vs. Trinidad. Golden Boy Promotions may have approached Trinidad Camp to make the fight competitive in the first nine or ten rounds without anyone going for a knockout. This will make the fight close and pave the way for a possible mega-million dollar rematch or even trilogy. Then De la Hoya ran the few remaining rounds to avoid being knocked out.
Dela Hoya vs. Mayweather. The two camps could have agreed to make the first eight to ten rounds close and competitive without anyone going for a knockout for the same reason as the Dela Hoya vs. Trinidad match up. Mayweather however, was not a power puncher so Dela Hoya did not have to run but only exercised caution during the last few rounds.
Mosely vs. Alvarez. The fight was rigged. GBP convinced Mosely to take it easy on Alvarez so that boxing will sustain its momentum with the continued rise of a new darling superstar or future golden boy. Mosely complied with the “noble” intention of giving back to ensure the continued “growth” of the business side of the sport which he so dearly love, notwithstanding that he would in effect be thrashing its very essence of competition. You can observe that during the match with Alvarez, Mosely did not throw even a few powerful over hand rights which had been the trademark of his career. During the early going, Mosely threw a lot of short and slow punches which Alvarez could not even fend off or avoid. The reflex of the upstart was so slow and inexperienced that the whole match, Mosely minimized or did not throw if at all, his vaunted over hand right. A lot of the punches Mosely threw were wide so they can be telegraphed or during the few times they were thrown fast, the punches were deliberately made to overshoot the target. Alvarez fought valiantly but did not know that his opponent was holding off his offense.
Pacquiao vs. Margarito. Pacquiao let Margarito off the hook in the last two rounds because of his compassion, and also because he understands the business side of boxing. Maragarito who was in the same promotional outfit was at that time, being groomed for a multi-million dollar grudge match with Cotto.

    6. Given these possibilities, I hope the boxing community come together to introduce reforms that will prevent these types of manipulations in order to restore and elevate the sport to its former glory.

  106. What I’ve seen in this fight

    1. Bradley – punched more, hits gloves, air and arms most of the time. Exhibited more stamina and moved a lot. This created an illusion especially in the later rounds – that he has done more to win the fight (in the eyes of the 2 judges)
    2. Judges – Credited Bradley for his actions especially when Pacman was timid in the later rounds. However, judges should have clear guidelines and criterion in judging. They probably don’t understand that this is a fight sport where only clean and effective strikes counts as points. In some fight sports: even if you hit the body of your opponent if the strike is not a damaging strike then it is not counted as point, how much less is hitting the arms of the opponent, the air and the gloves.
    3. Fight – is synonymous to war, you need to win by subduing your enemy. Bradley is using guerrilla tactics but it is a fight used not to overwhelm your enemy it is a strategy for survival. Pacman is like the Americans army fighting the guerrillas in Afghanistan, Iraq and Vietnam. Even if the US military is evidently stronger they can’t totally dominate what they cannot see or an enemy that runs away. But let the US military face another army in an open battlefield I believe it will be a decisive fight – no judges needed

    4. Pacman – His fighting style is best watched if the opponent is a “come forward” fighter like Hatton, Margarito, Eric Morales. Some people don’t understand the difficulties of an attacker, because in a “striking” fight the striking distance is always a factor. In every fight with a running opponent it was always Pacman doing the “distance” problem solving his opponents are just waiting for his initiative. This causes Pacman to gas out in the later rounds. You can see him breathe in the mouth and do less.

So I think boxing judges should be knowledgeable in fight sports, must be clear with criterion, must have clear eye sights, people in their 70′s are expected to have vision problems, therefore this is not the line of work for them. We cannot use age and experience as the measurement of credibility. Also, by having the appropriate judges boxing will prevent conspiracy because judges cannot say they based their judgment on their “OWN” point of view and feelings, they have to use the standard. With clear standards and good eyesight there can be no excuses

Pacman’s fights are becoming less action pack not because of Pacman’s deteriorating skills but because he has earned a reputation that made his latter opponents adopt the guerrilla fighting style. No one wants to fight him toe to toe anymore. Who wants to be knocked out?

Pacman won but this tells us that boxing must standardize the “judging” to avoid shady elements, wrong judgment and the fall of boxing

  107. Bradley won, because that Judges are too old to see. They thought Bradley was Chuck Norris.

  108. I don’t believe the judges were blind or senile. I can only conclude that they were paid to fix this fight.

  109. 1st off, lay off Jerry Roth. He’s the only judge who got it right. Did anyone see the ref step in between them during pacquiao’s approach in the closing seconds of the 10th round? That was unprofessional, if not questionable.

Watch this video from the Pacquiao vs Bradley fight. Leave your comment after seeing this video. The point of the video is to show how bad the commentating was that night by the HBO analysts. However, you may see things that you didn’t see. I think it will give some insight as to why the fight was closer than you think.

  111. Jerry Roth, hands down, is one of the best boxing judges in the entire world. He judged this fight to perfection, every news media source agreed, so, why would anyone question him or his decision? Jerry Roth has always been right on with his decisions, and, I think without Roth being part of the big fights would be a reason to be concerned.

By David on Oct 7, 2012

  112. Hi,

I’m not sure what article you read, but Jerry Roth judged the fight IN FAVOR OF Manny Pacquiao. Now, as for the other two judges, maybe they have cataracts. Roth typically is a solid judge.

  113. Everyone who saw the fight in favor of Pacquiao is obviously drinking the Kool-aid that HBO was serving. That idiot Lampley and equally blind sidekick Steward were so bias in their commentary that it was amusing. Pac was being credited with scoring punches that touched nothing but Las Vegas air. If the ” informed” fans/viewers saw this as an obvious win for Pac then Samuel Peters should have certainly been given the victory over Klitschko. Klitschko threw alot of insignificant punch except for a few after Peters had punched himself out. Sam definitely threw more bad intention strikes.
